Cruicial M4 0009 Firmware Update

Recieved my Crucial M4 128GB SSD this morning! :D :D However, I am at work still and I will not be able to test it until late tonight when I get home! :(

Only one thing that worried me slightly, it says on the information printed on my SSD that it has Firmware version 0002, even though on OcUK it states that these batch should have the latest 0009 loaded. Has anybody else who pre-ordered theirs & recieved theirs today say the same thing?? I'm not all that concerned or anything but I just wanted to see if anyone else has the same thing?

Thanks all - Liam[/QUOTE

that's strange it def says v 009 on the website...
maybe they are actually v009 on the drive but the sticker wasn't updated?

hope so!

That's what I was thinking... Crucial possibly loaded the latest firmware at the very last minute before they dispatched to OcUK. Or OcUK loaded the latest firmware on all the new SSD's themselves possibly? :p

My 128gb just arrived. Same as above, its got the 002 sticker on the drive. Box and bag are sealed... so will be interesting to know what Firmware its got. Anyway of checking?

Get to your computer to test it out ASAP before I get the chance to get to my computer tonight?? lol :D

To find out which firmware is on it go into device manager and in disk drives highlight your m4 drive and right click choose properties then details then from the drop down box choose hardware id and the firmware number will be displayed.

The drives will have firmware 0002, OCUK do not state firmware 0009 is loaded, the advert merely states that ** FIRMWARE UPDATE 0009 - Increased speeds up to 550MB/s **
that is fact as proven by existing users who have updated,
We will all have to update our own drives....

oh shame

well I am running ubuntu 10.04 lts version
it is bloody quick I'd love to keep it like this but there's a few complications

tv card
printer
additional monitor

for those reasons I'm more than likely going to invest in a new SSD drive.
prob this m4 128gb version... might sound noobish but to firmware upgrade does the drive need to be empty? If I do it after I've installed windows will it be okay?

I just read the same thing.

No and yes.... the drive can be as is or with Windows, it has been tested and proved that there is no data loss with the firmware upgrade...

Thanks but surely the best thing to do is to upgrade firmware and then install...

its just when they release a v10 or a newer version one is hardly going to reinstall just to do a firmware upgrade. you get me?

I get you and agree, if it's new upgrade then install... later upgrade, don't worry just do it...

I got a 64gb on the shop offer page will it come with the new firmware or will i have to update it.

Finally got my new SSD running! The entire setup (well, apart from breaking one of my SATA cables trying to disconnect the HDD & I've not got a spare one, doh!!), configuration & installation of Windows 7 all went through without a single problem. Here are the before the firmware update & after the firmware update shots:

Yes, I can confirm that mine came with the older 0002 firmware pre-loaded, but I managed to get the latest 0009 installed easily via download and then burn to disk as an ISO. It's safe to say that I am over the moon with this SSD! :D I am truly amazed by how quick everything is, Windows boots from power on to desktop in 10 seconds!

Amazing update

I have updated my M4 128gb from 0002 to 0009 and I my windows boot has gone from 42 second to 35 second from cold boot and form the power button being pressed.

I would be faster if I did a clean install and I disable my onboard marvel controller, I use ony my intel sata 6 ports. I will try it out soon.

I have to say Cruical have been the most reliable so far touch wood ;)

I have my original M225 128Gb in my laptop and still working great.
Then I have a C300 64gb in my dads computer working great.
And my new M4 128gb in my desktop and works great.

I now get 7.9 on the windows index.

Also getting 545mb/s on atto, beat that sandforce controllers :P

That looks pretty good

So did you install windows first and then upgrade the firmware?

Yes I did. I only installed Windows first because I wanted to test the speed while using the original 0002 firmware that it came with. I then updated the firmware straight after the first test and it updated fine, and I can safely confirm that the firmware upgrade does not interfear with the data on the SSD at all, everything was still intact :)

Just need to get a new SATA cable now so I can use both my HDD and the SSD together.

I've got a couple of questions, obviously I have got the SSD connected to one of the SATA 3 ports and it will stay there for best performance - but what is the best option to do about the HDD drive, shall I keep that connected to the 2nd SATA 3 port as well as it is a SATA 3 drive, or hook it up to the SATA 2 port because the SATA 2 ports use the Intel controller? (bearing in mind that the SATA 3 ports use the Marvell controller if I am right?)

Lastly, at the beginning when I went into the BIOS and I set the SATA model from IDE to AHCI, it asked me to specify which SATA ports to "hot plug/AHCI" enable, obviously I selected the SSD drive but I did not select anything else, do I leave this option turned on only for the SSD drive or shall I enable this for the HDD & DVD drive as well?

Thanks all - Liam

Most Sandy Bridge motherboards have 2 SATA 3 ports that are an Intel controller, 4 SATA 2 that are an Intel controller and then 2 SATA 3 ports that are a Marvell controller. Saying that there's no point wasting one of your Intel SATA 3 ports with a mechanical HDD because they aren't fast enough to make proper use of the interface.

Edit 2 - the SATA 3 ports on my board do use the Intel controller.
