Cycling Holidays

Thanks guys, we've got 1 hold bag between us and will leave a little room in it in case they decide to be pedantic...:p
The 1 hold bag will be under one of your names so whoever checks in without a hold bag, I'd be careful with what's packed in that bike box (and also hand luggage as there will be a weight limit on that too)

Hardest climb in UK though? That little thing? :p

It's certainly the hardest climb I've done!

We went with Monarch and packed all our clothes for the week in our bike bags, had no issues either way. Our hand luggage wasn't weighed on the way back which was a bonus as it was definitely over weight. If anyone queried the clothes in the bike boxes I'd just say it was padding. :p

Myself and Maxeh are taking our trusted steeds to Schliersee Germany in June and flying with EasyJet.

For both of us it's the first time we'll be taking bikes abroad with an airline. They have a generous 32KG weight limit but do state 'no other items' in the bike bag/box but I've seen suggestions that they are never checked and such a generous weight limit would suggest against their rule.
  • Has anybody recently flown with EasyJet and encountered problems padding & protecting your bike & box with bits of kit?
  • Logic would dictate packing CO2 canisters isn't the brightest idea... I'm sure we'll find a LBS and source some out there.

If it's not advisable to take a track pump then we'll make sure we have a decent mini between us.

They don't care about any of that in your bike box tbh. I always chuck tools etc in with the bike to max out the weight. Not sure on co2 canisters but suspect maybe worth getting some out there.

Plunged for the Scicon Aerotech in the end, was fairly set on the BikeBoxAlan but Wiggle had it up for £460 so didn't mind stumping a little extra. As it happens I'm not having to pay anything for the stay :)

End of June I'll post some feedback on how I got on without de-railing

I don't think this has been discussed yet... but what have people who don't have any form of cycle insurance in the UK opted for when riding abroad?

British Cycling offer a few options but I'm also thinking about the value of my equipment in addition to any injury or damages caused. My home insurance covers cycles up to a specific amount against theft but I'd be surprised if this extends overseas and it doesn't function the same way as vehicle insurance...

https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/membership

For any other holidays I usually use a price comparison and take out a policy for the duration as historically I haven't travelled enough to warrant an annual policy, this covers some 'activities' but with a 'cycling specific' holiday (taking own bike) I'm not sure if these type of policies will be suitable.

Thanks.

Don't bother jus use my travel insurance.

Thanks, I see what you mean about some policies specifying 'Cycling' and 'Cycle Touring' differently.

As it happens I have EU cover free with my current account so will get in touch to see what their stipulation for 'Cycling' covers. :)

I've used Travel Nomads. My friend actually claimed from them recently when he broke his collarbone in Germany (hospital stay, assistance getting his bike back, flight booking, etc). They were pretty decent.

I've booked a cycling holiday in Nepal for November, I think I need to improve my climbing :D

More details!

Talking to a friend earlier about going away in October half term. Thomas. Please think you said you'd used BA and they give you bike for free? As I have some flight discounts I need to use up so was thinking of using them to go southern Italy as a change from Majorca!

Im trying to book a holiday to Mallorca in Sept but the prices seem high, havent been able to find a good deal anywhere. Requirements are all inclusive in Port de Pollença and preferably a reputable airline. Last year we got it for around £500 all in but this year its coming in at £800

Where are people staying in Mallorca? Ive only stayed at the Pollenca Park hotel but its mega bucks this year.

I think Pollenca Park have recently increased prices.

Last year we stayed in Alcudia. Just as easy to get to the mountains etc and it did work out cheaper. Maybe have a look there?

For those prices you'd be better off renting an apartment and eating out I reckon. We got a nice enough place one road back from the beach in Puerto Pollenca for £300 for 8 nights and it slept 4 if you really wanted (one twin room, one bunk bed).

I was just looking at Alcudia and villas, i was surprised how reasonable they are if you split it and they do look nice. I think we want to go all inclusive at a hotel tho because of the amount of food/ beer will be drunk;)

Alcudia the two times I've stayed.

All inclusive is good though when you're on a cycling holiday as you just eat so much. But if there is a crowd that don't mind sharing duties you'd get much better value with sorting somewehre out yourself and doing the cooking.
