D&D 5e, starting a game soon, any DM's have tips?

I love combat clerics, people who try to play a heal role ala WoW type experience end up hugely bored casting Sacred Flame waiting to heal. Plus you have a bard to back you up!

Yeah it's a pain but a great document and easy for tracking and levelling up etc.

I hope you know I expect all my Bard players to only speak in verse for all sessions at all times. Limericks are acceptable too :D

Hahah this shall be interesting... Creating my insults list for vicious mockery now.
Limericks at the ready

Hah! This will be the healiest group I've ever been a part of.

I was thinking rogue or warlock. Or perhaps both, in time.

I see someone mentioned a dwarf barbarian and someone else a mage - in which case my choice might provide good balance.

Dan already submitted a sheet for a warlock so need to give that one a Miss unless we want to double lock :p

More healing may be useful as if I'm scaling up encounters more damage will be coming in may be tough for a single healer to keep up with especially considering 5e is a bit tough on first level characters for some reason.

Who said they were building a tankier character?

I'm possibly a Lawful Evil Tempest Cleric...

:D

I went full chaotic evil with a "good" veneer once and co-ordinated (this is about 10-15 years back) through secret notes.

Kept doing nasty **** to trip up the party but they kept thinking it was just the DM being a git to them. I eventually got discovered and my gold dragonborn sorcerer was outed and murdered unceremoniously without a trial which was rather unfair from an apparently "good" group :p:D

With the number of people able to heal we could setup a business, no need to go adventuring. :p
I've sent you a quick draft of my character sheet, few bits to tweak and probably more story elements to add.

I called dibs on the dwarvern barb

So that's currently a battle cleric, druid, bard, warlock and barbarian. Have I missed anyone?
Very strong from a potential healing point of view - and two front-line meat-shields (of sorts).
It gives plenty of options for the remainder.

thibk it's just yourself and Shami who haven't declared. Has Hughes?

I'm confused! :p

Busy this morning but I'll try and consolidate something later.

I am fully expecting to see reports from the Guild of Healers and Injury Specialists on all this.

I would have joined but I'm guessing its D&D 5th and I've never played it (not really branched out beyond Pathfinder).

Ok I've sorted my brain out, we have;

Pudney - Warlock
sky - Bard
Suen - Druid

All in with sheets.

Pookie - TBC
Hughes - Cleric
Shami - TBC
Stuie - Barbarian

Waiting on sheets.

My brain is making sense again now :p

I'm sure we can keep an injury log and put together a report of healing services that have been provided.
Once I get access to Wildshape, I'll probably be the cause of many injuries.

I used to stick to Pathfinder but since picking up D&D 5th Edition I've not really gone back much outside of GMing the occasional Pathfinder Society game at events.

You don't see many people playing a Monk, so it'd be a nice addition to the party.
Plus I love how much of a total wrecking ball Monks become in later levels.

In one of my past games, we had a Monk completely ruined a young bronze dragon's day. It was flying out of reach of the other melee characters, so by us using a combination of a Stone Wall spell and the Monk's ability to run up a vertical surface he ended up causing the dragon to fail a save against Stunning Fist and fall out of the sky... I've never seen a GM be more disappointed in their planned encounter than during that moment.

I will do some monk building tonight then :)

I know that feeling, this happened in a Dungeon world game i ran, Shami and Pudney may remember this.

I think Shami was the Druid, Pudney the ranger.

So, I am GM'ing a DW game. The group consists of a fighter, druid, and ranger.

The group have managed to get into the necromancers keep via a secret tunnel that led to the store beneath the Kitchens, They move through the kitchen with no hassle and find them selves in the Dining room. They hear people approaching so the Druid turns into a rat, the ranger hides in the shadows and the fighter sits at the head of the table as if he belongs.

When the people enter and spot the fighter they star to ask him who he is and why he is sat there, he immediately starts making demands about a feast sending the members of the necromancers cult scurrying into the kitchen. After a brief discussion between the ranger and the druid about what to do the druid leaves deciding he does not want to know what the ranger has planned, the ranger and fighter discuss killing the cult members but eventually decide to just leave them and move on so not to draw attention (this is a turning point for these characters, the rangers first response is usually to perform a called shot)

With some careful sneaking around the group manage to get up the only tower where the find the necromancer, on their way up they managed to steal some robes from a dorm so with their bad disguise they walk into the library where they find the necromancer and some cultists behind a large table discussing the contents of certain book. After some initial questions by the necromancer the other cultists in the room scurry off at his orders and he beckons the group to come before his table. At this point the fighter walks past the group to the desk and declares

Fighter: "Here comes the Cole train baby"

I had no idea what this was in reference too, so the others are laughing while I ask the fighter what on earth he is doing

GM(me): "what?"

Fighter: "I flip the table"

using the appropriate skill he tests, rolling 11

Necromancer and cultists pinned beneath the huge desk.

One of the pinned cultists begins to murmur a spell (they think) so he quickly looses his head.

The others do nothing and are promptly questioned and killed by the party.

I had planned an encounter here based on how they usually react when presented with people in a room, they would usually go in swords swinging but for once they didn't, I had it planned out to give them a really tough encounter, instead they evade it.
