D&D 5e, starting a game soon, any DM's have tips?

It's the first PC death by the DM!

Technically John split the party and unleashed the monsters. If Owain had known the slow speed of the mummies he probably would have positioned things better. He probably would have removed curse before moving as well (or dodged...)

So many ways it could have been different.

Pretty sure that's not the first PC death :D

So who split the party?

first death that was not done by the party itself!

Yeah it pretty much was my fault, then again If i had not of ran it would probably be me dead ... although i was at full health so .... sorry about all of that.

Although if you were dead you could have been saved :p

Some good tips in here. I’m dming tonight, a local game going through Hoard Of The Dragon Queen. Midway through episode 3 :)

I was just reading through my HotDQ blog from when 5e first came out. With a few tweaks here and there it's great fun.

Just got past the Hatchery, so starting chapter 4 soon. I don't DM too often, as we have 2 other full time Dm's who write their own campaign. So if we're missing anyone we tend to do one from the book. I've got Rise of Tiamat also to follow on with the same characters afterwards :)

We're sort of transitioning into Rise of Tiamat as well, I'm mixing it into the end of Storm King's Thunder.
We did the Lost Mine of Phandelver, then HotDQ, then Rise of Tiamat, but started new characters after LMoP. It was a good year of playing, if not longer, and some of my fondest moments come from that series. We didn't use the milestone system as my party, at the time, preferred a standard exp approach. They finished the entire thing at level 13 or so - and they just were not high enough to really give Tiamat a run for her money - and that was despite throwing in some extra stuff to beef out the adventure (I took the Underdark's Lost Level module and converted it on the fly!).

Yes, we're currently playing the Pathfinder 2 Playtest, but I still have a soft spot for 5e - and hopefully we'll get back to it at some point. Our next game will almost definitely form part of the podcast.

We're using milestone and same characters are being used between both books. I played LMOP, but didn't DM it :) I've got a few things in my mind for Tiamat (not that we've started the book yet) including potentially writing some of my own if they enjoy the final fight, as someone needs to travel to the depths of hell to finally put her down, right?! :)

I've seen a lot of suggestions of extending rise of tiamat out like that and having them go hunt her down on her own turf. But in my opinion unless you're getting to epic levels there is no party out there that could handle actual tiamat on her home plane. The statted one is just an avatar after all.

Had a session Sunday night and gave the blog a read. Enjoyed it! Haven't gone too much further than where we are currently (episode 4), but seems like a good group! :)
Awesome - always good to know someone found it entertaining. Pretty much the same group are in most of our podcast.
