Dalglish resigned/sacked?

I really hope he either hits the ground running or is given the time he needs to sort the team out

That depends whether the majority of Liverpool fans expect to finish in the top four next season, otherwise he's got no hope.

Obviously that's a completely unrealistic goal for them.

This is the issue indeed.

I'd say a sizable chunk of the Liverpool fanbase still see themselves as a top four club. In reality this isn't the case anymore. Without pulling a MC and just spending hundreds of millions, they aren't going to be fighting for CL football anytime soon.

I hope the owners realise this and don't give Rodgers silly targets.

With FFP its even less likely, unless we pull a MC in more ways then one (dodgy sponsorship for ex)

For people to come in and make the bold statements that Liverpool are no longer a top 4 team.

2011-12 8th
2010-11 6th
2009-10 7th
2008-09 2nd
2007-08 4th

They haven't finished in the top 4 for the past 3 seasons, you can argue it's a blip or that the other teams in the League have been strengthening but I don't think it's a gross exaggeration to suggest that at the present moment in time they're not in the top 4.

Whether they should be top 4 is perhaps a different question but based on league form over the past few seasons it's not an entirely unwarranted claim.

And what do you base that on? And who would you say are the top 4 teams?

The below:

And the fact that Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs are likely going to have better squads next season.

Which of those do you think Liverpool can take the place of?

They may be a top 4 team again in future, but currently they are not. I think this is quite clear. There is work to be done at Liverpool and it begins today, they've just said at the press conference that their aim is to be the best team in England. I think that's far too optimistic but they could break into the top 4 in the next few years.

Did they say the expect it tomorrow? Of course that's the aim. I'm more than confident that we'll be considerably closer to the CL places at the very least next season.

Yeah that's going to be the aim, but it'll take a good few years at least if it's even possible. With Man City up there it's not going to be an easy ride for any of us.

I would say they can replace Chelsea or Spurs out of your list.

If Spurs lose players, then maybe. Chelsea? Absolutely zero chance unless they get a manager who is a disaster.

Very impressive press-conference from Rodgers, he spoke really well.

Of course it will take time but we're the most successful side in the country, our long-term aim has to be to get back to the top.

I thought so too.

How much money do you have available at the moment for example? That's going to be the thing that stops you.

Are the current owners able to provide a Man City/Chelsea level of funding?

There won't be any City/Chelsea type spending. The clubs aim is to compete in the same way Barca compete with Real.

Well to reverse that, what do you think qualifies Liverpool as a one of the big four?

As mentioned already, they've finished outside the top four for three years. They don't have the finance to compete with clubs above them. They don't have a squad to be feared anymore. Just like Stamford Bridge, teams don't fear going to Anfield anymore.

I mean hell, I'm a Chelsea fan, and I doubt Chelsea as one of the big four currently. Winning the CL obviously goes a long way, but the league performance needs to improve massively.

The chances of either of the top two finsishing 5th next season are all but non existent. Chelsea are making serious moves to strengthen so I think the chances of them finishing 5th or worse are also quite slim. That leaves one spot, and while I don't think Arsenal/Spurs/Newcastle are completely out of Liverpools reach, there is definately work to be done to overtake all of these.

That's the problem they have though, it's not one team they need to get stronger than, it's multiple teams in one go. Liverpool really couldn't have picked a worse time to fall away slightly, when the most successful club of the last 20 years simply can't compete with two teams financially, that leaves very little room to manoeuvre for all the other teams trying to catch up.

i think the best first 11 they can put out at the moment can't match the top 4/5 teams (city, utd, chelsea, arsenal, spurs).

of those city/chelsea have the money to improve, united have the manager.

that leaves them chasing arsenal and spurs, who can improve with some signings, which leaves them a bit further behind.

they could possibly push for 4th with arsenal/spurs if they make the right signings and arsenal/spurs don't and/or sell players.

i think rodgers can have a big impact on the season, if he can improve there home form enough to turn the draws into a few wins.
