Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

It's a weird section of the game, pretty much the whole of Darkroot Garden/Basin is optional, except for Sif, who you can run to, past all the enemies, when you buy the Crest.

Same with Blight town if you have the Master Key, just run down the ladders, across the water and kill Quelaag.

You can summon for quelaag if you get yourself in human form near the bonfire in Blighttown swamp... You will be invaded by an NPC called Maneater Mildred, defeat her and then you get to summon her just outside Quelaag... Makes it much easier.

I'm having trouble with Quelaag. Taking that bitch out as a straight melee character is a ******* nightmare.

As noted, you can summon for her fight. You can also fairly easily avoid her attacks. Her sword swipes can be avoided by staying in close and rolling left or right when she swings. You can predict her aoe by looking out for her human part leaning forward which is your cue to back well away. If you're not fast rolling (less than 25% equip load) then I recommended being so. Not just for this fight but just in general as dodging is a lot more helpful than ranking in this game (for the most part). I'd also recommend getting the Wolf Ring asap (if you haven't already) if you're going the lighter dodge method as it gives you a good amount of poise which stops you from flinching after every hit you take from many enemies.

What are your stats by the way? Oh and I'd recommend "downgrading" the raw uchi back to +5 and upgrade it up the regular path path to +15 eventually as the weapon paths are mostly useless for most builds.

Thanks. That was extremely useful. I had to go down the Mildred route, even though she spent most of the fight stuck in lava meaning I still had to fight Quelaag more or less alone. I also made sure I was wearing the wolf ring and used the ring you get off that stone dude to make me less than 25% loaded.

I'm just back at the blacksmith so I'm going to downgrade the Uchi back from raw as you suggest.

Most NPC summons in the game work like that tbh, they just distract the boss as you take them out. Mildred is one of the best summons iirc. A few NPCs you can even just leave to it and they will pretty much defeat them themselves!

Well I eventually ground my way past Ornstein and Smaugh.

Christ on a cornflake that was an insanely difficult fight. I think I may have gone to Anor Londo too early because I found pretty much every enemy there an absolute nightmare to fight. Still I did get a nice shiny Queelag fire sword out of it which seems very good at making skeletons dead.

I've been advised that I need to get my hands on a divine weapon before I go to the Tomb of Giants. I don't think I've seen one thus far in the game so grateful for any advice as to where I can get one?

Get the Divine Ember and give it to blacksmith Andrei. He'll forge you one.

Otherwise, there is a divine shortsword on a corpse next to the Undead Dragon in the Valley of Drakes. Not sure how useful it will be at your level, though.

Did you pick up the Occult Club in Blighttown(I think, correct me if I'm wrong). If you did, you can downgrade it at a blacksmith to divine, it packs a fair punch as well

edit- actually is it in Anor Londo just before O&S?

PS. I love Ornstein and Smough!....Did you summon for it?

Yea, it's in the room where you get Havel's gear.

Thanks. Used the club and owned Nito. He was ridiculously easy in the end. I had far more trouble with O&S although that may have been down to the simple fact that trying to manage 2 of them at once was rathet taxing.

No I didn't summon for that fight. I was thinking about it but managed to get it done without in the end. The key (for me) was taking Ornstein out furst as I found Smough vastly easier to deal with, even in his enhanced form.

I had real problem with Nito on my first playthrough for some reason. took me a while to work out a tactic for him. It didn't help that I was using the club, as my only divine weapon, and I was not used to the moveset at all.

This is on Midweek madness for a fiver. Clicked on it and it says xbox 360 strongly recommended.

What is it like to play with mouse n keyboard? I'm playing (and really enjoying) Kingdoms of Amalur with a mouse & keyboard, is it similar controls to that?

The combat can be similar at times(though KOA is nowhere near as deep!), but the controls are completely different, you need to be a lot more precise in DS, and the controls are a little more complex.
