Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

Had my first invade at the weekend in the depths of all levels....The guy forgot to account for the fact that I knew how to parry!

Still not out of the depths though, had 20K souls so spent a lot of time getting out of the depths to spend them before losing them, think Im making progress though as think I know where to go after messing about in it for hours.

As a dex build is it a waste to put the 3 extra points into strength for the drake sword? I'm already strength 13 to use the winged spear although I'm probably going to kill the merchant for the Uchigatana. So basically what's the best weapon to use from here? Don't want to waste 3 points in strength if I am better off sticking with the dex weapons as I'm 20 sex at the moment.

Unless you plan on hardcore PvP which at this point is basically dead, put points wherever you want.

Specifically though, there really isn't much point putting more points in just for the Drake Sword. Though there are a few DEX weapons which require higher STR, 14 is enough to wield the vast majority including the Uchi, my personal favourite the Balder Side Sword only needs 10.

Yeah I guess I'm hung up on everyone saying how it's impossible to get through the start without the drake sword. It's also been quite deceptively easy(ish) so far which makes me think it's going to have a sudden ramp up in difficulty any moment. So far the hardest thing to take out was that metal pig thing. Although after dying a lot I used some firebombs and that worked well.

Black Knight Sword is far better :) Which can be had around the same playtime, if not slightly before. In fact you can finish the game with that sword, don't think you can with a drake sword. Might be wrong though?

Anyone saying this is a moron and I'm pretty sure no one here has said that.

 No it doesn't, it is an incredibly good starting weapon.

No I haven't read anyone here saying that just comments on other forums when I was doing some general searching. I was hoping it would turn out that I doth need to use it and seems I should be fine with my spear as I do like the move set and range on it.

Yes it is better but it requires a, luck or cheating to acquire early game and b, much higher STR than aceytrixxis going to want to use considering he is going DEX, which is really the most important point.

It does, it's overpowered and takes the fun out of the early game for new players who would struggle otherwise and it's moveset is as boring as watching paint dry.

Oh drop it will you? This got boring the last time people started whinging about it. Let people make their own decisions based on facts rather than how you think the game should be played.

You don't "need" to use any weapon in the game, that's the beauty of it, the spear will do you fine as long as you understand its limitations, its a fairly low damage weapon with long animations, however its also very safe.

In a recent replay I ignored the DS to see if what difference it would make(it was only my second playthrough) and tbh I got the claymore to +4 before the Gargoyles without grinding at all and that was better....this was with a STR build though.

Not sure about early-game DEX alternatives. I wouldn't want to get the Uchi that early because of how you acquire it, but you could probably get a BSS, but not sure how much damage it would do early? Isn't there an enchanted Scimitar or something you can get quite early, or am I thinking of something else?

The Claymore is a good alternative to the DS and is generally what I start with on both STR and DEX builds unless I get VERY lucky with a BSS drop, however it's also a Greatsword meaning its slower, so even though the AR may be the same you will be doing less DPS. Again I am not saying the DS is the "best weapon", I'm saying it is "a choice" for new players who might want a slightly easier early game.

BSS can be a massive ball ache to farm early as there are only about 4-5 Balder Knights in the Parish and the drop rate is very low, plus the nearest bonfire is a bit of a trek.

Acquiring the Uchi isn't as bad as it used to be after they updated merchants, as long as you buy all the unique stuff, you can get everything else from other merchants.

I use the longsword or Balder Sword, take it to +5 and stick with that till i get something better(except the Balder, i use that to endgame). As for good DEX weapons, buying a bunch of arrows then killing the merch to get the Uchi or making a run for the Great Scythe.

So far I'm finding an arrow to draw them in then a light attack when they get close finishes off everyone in undead burg. Or two arrows to take them out if they decide to use as estus flask themselves.

Managed to defeat the bell gargoyles. Although I ended up using the drake sword. I realised I could wield it two handed and then tried it out. Starting doing loads more damage (obviously) and took out the black knight and got his sword which got me thinking about moving to a strength build. So I strayed pumping points into str managed to one hand the drake sword for the gargoyle fight and now I'm now at strength 19. So just need to get 5000 more souls and I can one hand the black knight sword. Totally changed my build but given that the sword needs 18 dex I don't feel what I've been doing is a total waste since I'm really only 2 levels over where I need to be.

Felt like an absolute king when I took down the gargoyles though.
