Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

This is a console port with no effort for making it PC friendly. I tried KB/M and it's wasn't too friendly even with the mouse fix (DSMFix). You ideally need a controller and to spend a bit of time tweaking it for PC before it's properly playable.

It's a very tough game (certainly for me as a beginner) but really rewarding for that very reason.

As much as I like keys and mouse, I'd recommend using a 360 pad.

Ahh. Cool. Okay, I think I may give this a miss then. I'm really not into the idea of going through the process of getting familiar with a gamepad just for one game that really needs it, even if it is a pretty good one. Maybe I'll keep an eye on the patches/community mods to see if it ever improves in terms of kb/m support. Cheers.

It requires a single file to be downloaded and dropped in the directory, it really doesn't count as 'tweaking' too much, and takes next to no time! However it shouldn't have to be done, damn port.

I'll be farming Green Titanites a good while before I go back in there again :P This game is just freaking awesome! :D

Blighttown is easily the best place for that. There are around 15 slugs in a nice easy run that have a chance to drop either a Large Titanite Shard, or 5 Green Shards. Equip the Gold Serpent ring and you'll get a good number each run. Really close to a bonfire as well :)

Do you need a magic weapon to be able to inflict damage to the golems in the Darkroot Basin?

No but you'll need to have a reasonably upgraded weapon to do any meaningful damage.

I used the area in Darkroot basin just outside the entrance to the butterfly boss for soul farming so I got quite used to taking out the golems, +10 claymore & Zweihander were my weapons of choice, you can get a single two handed hit in before they get fully to their feet, then swap to sword and shield. If you've got high enough endurance you can literally take them out with 2 or 3 swipes of a +10 Zweihander or claymore, claymore is the best sword in the game IMO, the thrust does massive damage and scales nicely with strength/dexterity.

Thanks. :)

I have both of those weapons, though I don't really have the stats to do the zweihander justice (Vit 19 / End 19 / Str 17 / Dex 16). My claymore is upgraded to +5, and yes, it's quite easily my favourite weapon so far.

I did kill one of those mini-boss knights in the Undead Burg, which rewarded me with a 'black sword', or whatever it was called. That also looks to be a good weapon.

I hit 24STR early this morning and I can one-hand the Gravelord Sword, but Zweihander is still doing the 'not enough STR' animation one handed even though it too is a 24STR requirement and the same weight, the description says '...must be used two-handed..', thought it might be bugged so did the reloading, dropping/picking up and stuff that usually 'fixes everything' but still the same, tell me it's not a two-handed only weapon?

No it can be used in 1 hand, must be a bug...

I spent this morning setting this game after getting it at xmas. I'd heard about the mandatory dsfix mod but also found, for my particular system, I also had to spend some effort setting up sound and an xbox controller emulator for my ps2 pad. The sound mod in particular made a massive difference. It was down to me having an X-Fi card and stereo headphones. The game does not give you the best positional audio unless you set your speakers to 5.1, set creative console to CMSS 3d mode, and set up the game to use Alchemy, as per this thread. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2916099

Without this sound mod I was actually missing out on some background sounds when using stereo headphones.

I also used the x360ce controller drivers to let me remap the controlls on my ps2 pad, I think it also works for any pad. I used the 32 bit dll, even though I use 64 bit windows, the 64 bit dll didn't recognise my pad. http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/

Just thought I'd post this as I see most of the talk in this thread is about the dsfix, the sound problems don't get mentioned that much. Any fellow luddites might find it useful.

Had a dream last night that I killed the Blacksmith Golem in Anor Londo, I woke up sweating and upset.

That's when you know you need to get a life. :D

Oh well, I did it anyway and it sounded different to me, probably more to do with the Alchemy intervention I guess.

Last night I was ready to call it quits on the game, I struggled for over an hour, almost died countless times, just couldn't figure out how to do it the right way, would get passed the first stage and fail on the second part, I was gnashing my teeth in frustration, the controller was miraculously not thrown through the monitor, I even stopped to watch several YouTubes of how to do it, I was almost in tears and then it all came together and I managed the jump/run needed to get over to Snuggly...:p

Hi Guys,

After this game received a massive amount of praise on here, I finally picked this up in the Steam sale.

I played it for the first time last night and I have to admit I am underwhelmed to say the least:(

The graphics seem quite poor (console port I guess so par for the course).

I'm using a 360 controller but tbh the controls don't seem great - you can easily completely miss an enemy when trying to hit them for example.

I'm only onto the first boss and he already seems incredibly hard!

I suppose it isn't what I expected it to be.

There must be something to this game, because it's had a massive amount of praise. Do I just need to persevere with it?
