Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

Hi Guys,

After this game received a massive amount of praise on here, I finally picked this up in the Steam sale.

I played it for the first time last night and I have to admit I am underwhelmed to say the least:(

The graphics seem quite poor (console port I guess so par for the course).

I'm using a 360 controller but tbh the controls don't seem great - you can easily completely miss an enemy when trying to hit them for example.

I'm only onto the first boss and he already seems incredibly hard!

I suppose it isn't what I expected it to be.

There must be something to this game, because it's had a massive amount of praise. Do I just need to persevere with it?

Click the right stick to lock on to an enemy.

Make sure you install DSFix to greatly improve the graphics.

It's an extremely difficult game but stick with it and always seek advice if you get stuck.

For the first boss make sure you do a diving attack at the start to reduce his health by arond 25%. Thereafter keep your distance until he swings, then run in for a stab or two before running back for distance. Takes 3 or 4 goes to kill him.

Use the fix! It makes the game look far better.

The controls are fine imo, if you miss enemies either get better with manual aiming or use the lock on button which is helpful for when starting out ;) Lock on button is pushing down on the right stick iirc...

Edit: Ninja'd twice! :(

I'll install the DSFix this weekend. I did wonder why all the screenshots online looked way better than my game :D

I think half my issue with it was graphics. For some reason I struggle with playing games with bad graphics. I can only play old games with bad graphics if I played them when they came out originally, the nostalgia factor takes over. Weird I know.

I've been doing the drop attack and then strafing around before popping in for a few hits but he keeps getting me!

I will persevere with it anyway.

The graphics looked surprisingly good when I installed the DSFix, from what I remember it looked similar to a regular PC game instead of a console game

Damn it all to hell. Installed this yesterday and lost pretty much the rest of the day. Managed to get the Parish bell rung, now for the lower one.

Actually looks pretty good at 2560x1600 with DSfix and a few other tweaks.

Took me a while to get used to the xbox controller again but found the controls surprisingly easy to get to grips with. Lock on definitely helps loads, as does having an axe for sweeping.

Agreed with Dsfix the game looks like a modern game imo, sure not the best looking modern game but still looked very nice.

Use a Halberd (found infront of the Parish Castle entrance) or a Spear. Halberd just has stupid range and damage, and a Spear has stupid range and you can use it through a shield so you can attack without worrying about them hitting you. The Halberd's power attack is a 360* spin iirc, hits everything around you so it's incredibly useful.

No game looks better IMO than this with max SMAA/SSAO at a high res, nothing. That's probably just the art style and design of the armors/weapons/world/etc. though, but I really can't think of much which looks all that much better without running like a bag of spanners.

I still have this thing where I think BF3 looks amazing maxed out. I know they are different games but I really find it hard to find something that looks better, although BF3 is a rubbish game :)

Yeah, nothing has really came close to BF3 yet. If only the game was good :p

I grabbed this on Steam last night for £15, definitely looking forward to playing through it.

Apart from DSFix is there any must have mods? I've never really been big into modding.

First play through ever using a strength based build.

Totally slaughtering everything with a lightening zweihander, if I land 1 hit on any enemy they are basically dead, even if the hit doesn't kill them.

Never had such an easy time with tweedle dum & tweedle dee (Ornstein and Smough)

I felt that way after going for a more magic based character. Using the Dark Magic spells from the DLC, they both went down in 2-3 hits each. It was so easy (even on NG++) it felt like I was cheating!

I think the way the game works if you have a good understanding of how the stats affect things, and especially if you don't level too fast and pump lots of souls into buying upgrade materials, the game can become easy after a while.

This is why people attempt to complete the game at SL1 and create difficult to play RP builds, to add some challenge to the game.

Yeah, magic (Especially Dark Magic) is probably the most OP thing in this game. Ornstein jumped towards me, and died where he landed on NG++ thanks to Dark Bead + Pursuers :p.

Indeed. I blew through the Four Kings on NG++ without any trouble by using the same combination. I think my next character will have to be melee based (or perhaps a Faith build), otherwise I'll end up falling back on the Dark Magic as it's so easy to use (though it's awesomely cool as well).
