Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

Did anyone here have trouble with the bosses Ornstein and Smough in Anor Londo? So far its the hardest boss i have fought, and that is including bosses from the 1st game Demon Souls too.

Finally beat them solo @ slvl50, took me just over 3 and a half hours or so of trying. Had to do it naked in the end, slow rolling was getting me killed... :p

I am slowly progressing through the game though, while it is a great game, i am just not as addicted to it as i was with Demon Souls.

I am gonna have a proper experiment with weapons tomorrow to find out what I really want to use. Atm, I keep skipping between the Uchigatana, lightning spear, Estoc and falchion. Also have the stuff to upgrade one to divine, but not sure which

Yup, O&S are one of the toughest bosses in the game, and even though I've beaten the game 7 times, they still can give me trouble now. They become much easier if you get into Human form and summon Solaire for help, as even though he doesn't do a huge amount of damage against them, he can often distract them while you heal in safety.

I'm trying out a <25% encumbrance, thief + estoc/target shield combo at the moment.

I normally play using a greatsword and heavy armor, so this is quite the change for me. I am using the hornet ring for the first time since I am relying on ripostes and backstabs for my damage.

I have left my vitality at 12 to get my dex up nice and quickly to boost damage, I can barely survive more than 1 hit! :D

Still, neither can most of the enemies, and it is forcing me to get better at parrying.

Yeah, the Vitality on a build like that will always be a problem. When I did my one shot boss challenge, I never upgraded my Vitality for the whole playthrough, meaning I had 10 Vitality against everyone! It definitely does make you better at parrying/dodging though, especially if you don't have enough Stamina to stand there and block multiple hits.

My favorite weapon was the black knight halberd, does really good damage on first play-through and has a good moveset. Used it with balder shield and then just crimson skirt to keep weight under 25%. I found fast movement way more valuable than extra armour in this game, heavy armour only allows you to get hit a couple more times but makes it way harder to dodge.

Completed Demon's Souls a few weeks ago as well and really enjoyed it. Some of the levels where amazing like Tower of Latria :D

Main trouble i had was Smoughs's charge attack while dodging Ornstien's attacks. If Smough charged me once, that would be ok, but when he does it back to back from melee range, that really threw me off, and i found it near impossible to dodge.

I think in a new game+ i will use the summon, a distraction would make the fight so much easier.

They're probably the toughest boss on your first playthrough outside the DLC. I had a +4 lightning halberd by that time, maybe even a +5 so I absolutely demolished Smough making it a lot easier. I did it the reverse way in NG+ and that did take a few attempts. Nothing like screwing up a dodge and getting skewered when Ornstein has 1 hit left

Just got through Sen's Fortress. I don't think an enemy killed me once.... But I died about 5 times falling off of ledges! I thought the boss was one or the easier ones so far, though I did die on the first attempt. That NPC I summoned was useless... Just got stuck on the scenery and was attacking thin air for the while fight!

Sen's fortress was great, but tbh was a bit frustrating as all of my deaths there were due to poor controls/clipping issues.

Yeah, Iron Tarkus is an absolute beast, one of only two NPC summons I can think of where you can literally sit back and just dodge attacks while the NPC will destroy the boss for you (Witch Beatrice against the Moonlight Butterfly is the other).

I just got a Crystal Halbred, which seems to do a lot of damage, but is a bit slow for me. I am mainly using lightning spear. Atm I am being annihilated by two archers as I am as ending a support column in Anor Londo.

What level are you. Feel free to summon me if you want help passing that part, it's a bitch for new players :p.

Trick is to run up, when you get to the ledge they're standing on roll through the arrows they throw at you and he will pull out his sword then you easily parry him to death :).

TARKUUUSSS!
Anyway, he's the best NPC in the game, he can kill the boss for you :p
Sen's fortress is all about being aware of your surroundings, so your supposed to fall off ledges if your not careful enough :p
The problem i had was the lock on, I remember walking along a beam straight forward, locked on to a guy, killed him, but the camera locked onto some random guy in the distance, and it made me walk in the wrong direction and fall off! What do you mean by clipping?

Just done it finally! No humanity left now though.

The clipping that was really annoying me was more prevalent in Sen's Fortress because a lot of it was in narrow corridors. Things like those spear enemies being locked in to attack, but you go round a corner and they still get you. And the arrows getting stuck in midair are quite comical really!

Yeah, that can definitely be annoying, but when you learn the levels fully you can use it to your own advantage at times, attacking enemies through doors and walls. Take the Lower Undead Burg, where you're ambushed by the thieves, you can kill 2 of them through the doors before they jump you. Always handy :)

There is a very strange pattern developing in boss fights for me... I always very nearly do it first time, then struggle on next attempts! On Ornstein in and Smough atm, and killed the little one without taking a hit, then got the big one down to near death and got caught in an aoe attack which one hit me. Second time I tried it, I lasted a few seconds!

Edit - did it on third attempt, as usual!

Left Anor Londo now, and it appears I have messed up Firelink shrine by using the fire keeper soul. Steam says I have played for 50hours so far.... Time flies!

I think Anor Londo taught me a lot about the combat tbh.. I did have trouble with all of the Knights around there, but now am much better. I have abandoned the Lightning Spear now, as it always seems to miss after a roll for me.

2 questions-
1. I have all of these boss souls on me atm, but no idea what to do with them?...it says in the dexription that you can forge weapons with them, but I can't find how.
2. Weapon upgrades- Would it be a good idea to have one weapon upgraded in each way?...one divine, one magical etc?

Cheers

PS. I went back and killed the Hellkite Dragon just now, and got 10,000 souls....that seemed like loads not so long ago...

I would find a moveset and playstyle that you like and pick a weapon to upgrade based on that.

What stats do you have at the moment?

I would not recommend upgrading one weapon each way, unless you are going for the achievement, as the chances are your stats will not suit each of the weapons you are upgrading.
