Dashcams!

I'd like to get at least a front camera in my A3 but I would want the cables hidden, would this be a problem with it being a lease car? I can't really have someone cutting stuff if I have to return the car.

Nah, in the two cars I've fitted I've managed to stuff the cable completely hidden away into the facia and rubber seals around the cabin without using anything to secure them permanently. They just pull out if you need to remove it.

Well my 0806 lasted long... Worked for 1 journey.
Started the car up this morning and it's dead. Won't power on. Tried resetting it by holding the power button for 20 seconds etc.
All that comes on is a very very dim green LED screen won't boot up. Plug it into PC and I get device not recognised. Seems to be a common problem.

no problem with mine ;)

going to take out the memory card to tomorrow for the first time and see if it can read number plates ok :)

Your dash looks nice and sharp and in focus ;)

Might be worth cleaning the window and adjusting the view so more of the road is in view perhaps.

I just missed some prime dash cam footage in my old Saxo, which hasn't got a cam fitted :(

Was driving through Richmond Park, which is a two lane slow 20mph zone inundated with cyclists. It's a bit of a no-no to stop your car anywhere and they even stake the grass to stop people from pulling over.

Anyway, some lady in the oncoming direction stopped in the middle of the road. I'm not sure why, she had kids in the car, so perhaps there was a situation. It seems this angered a cyclist behind her and he either did or said something to **** her off as he overtook.

She wasn't having any of it and jumped right out, tutting and wagging her finger vigorously in true British fashion at the cyclist, shouting something about how unnecessary it was for the cyclist to do whatever he'd done. I didn't stick around to see what happened after that.

I was in prime recording position too! Doh!

need to clean the inside, outside was done very recently ;)
would that change the focus view?

EDIT //

whats the best way of taking off the wedges and camera mount off the screen so I can take a few wedges out?

They should pay off her loan, the dealership head in the video shows classic "I could be doing better things than this right now" body language and her face shows no regret.

Also, the car owner's dashcam, wtf kind of storage does she have to get 17 hours of footage!!

She was head of sales - probably has nothing to do with the spanner monkey side of the dealership. I read her body language as "I've been wheeled out by spineless management because I'm a hot blonde for the TV cameras and told to read from this script".

Customer expecting them to pay off the whole car loan for a 200 mile drive is taking the mick though. Getting the original issue fixed at another dealership at their expense and a few thousand compensation would be more appropriate.

We had a thread here a while back similar to this where some lairy mechanic took a forum members car for a spin.

I recently got myself a MiVue 518, and so far I'm really happy with it. Seems to work well, capturing decent footage, and although the included windscreen mount could be more compact it's OK. I haven't tested out its 'parking cam' features yet (tbh I usually take it down if my car's parked so it doesn't look like my car has valuable electronics to steal inside).

Because of the wide-horizontal-angle lens the 1080P footage is a little squashed, and I'd estimate you can only read number plates that are around a car-length away, but that seems like acceptable performance to me tbh. Here's some sample footage from a few weeks ago:

More:

I guess the next evolution of the dashcam will be spherical, no more need for rear facing ones, just 360 it!

That's awesome... If you mounted one on your roof it would be like having a google street-view car yet recording videos rather than pictures.

...I may just have had an awesome idea for how to improve google street-view :p.
