Dashcams!

Is powering it via the ODB port a wise thing to do? What sort of power does a dashcam draw?

The power draw is very little. The problem is that I don't drive a lot, so if I power the dashcam from the cigarette lighter socket, I have to remember to remove the power connector otherwise it will drain the battery. Plugged into the OBD port, I can leave it plugged in because it will detect when the voltage drops and switch off.

Find a fuse that is on the switched 12v circuit and add a fuse tap. My cigarette lighter stays on for just 15 mins after the car is locked - I would have thought most 12v sockets would have acted like this rather than delivering continuous power?

A lot of older cars have a permanent 12v live on acccessories sockets.
My Mrs’ a4 has that. Its very annoying. Keep meaning to wire her cam up to an Ignition live in the roof panel like in my car, as otherwise if anyone leaves the cam plugged in it can be a drain on the battery :(

It was a old guy and his wife early 80s. He said he put his automatic in the wrong gear. To be honest he was a nice old guy. Car was with motability. Motability have already contacted me saying he has admitted fault.

Time for him to stop driving then. Still, the impact was low speed so likely just a new bumper and airbag?

Kuga autoboxes follow the standard PRND straight line layout. Selecting reverse instead of drive isn't a mistake, it's incompetence.

Going to be cheeky and ask if anybody here who's hardwired their Nextbase dashcam still has the old 12v car charger cable going spare?

My father's partner managed to pull out the charger cable and ripped off the metal surround on the Mini USB plug. Being a sealed plug, I can't seem to fit it back and it's no longer powering the camera up on start (camera still turns on so hopefully all else is good).

I will have a look in the garage. If you don't hear from me, it means I can't find it lol

Thanks Diagro. If you don't have it, don't worry. I'm not sure now but I might even have a hardwire kit that I picked up when I got the cameras (was a few years back - 512G version) which I may have buried in a cupboard.

Main dealer or local garage, idiots are idiots.

Full vid, uploaded on a diff link as I don't want the service manager seeing it's got 000's of views before I get what I want (which I don't know yet). Haven't got round to moving the camera into the sweep of the wiper blades...

Both of them were sacked, my next service (major) is FOC and will be done by older technician (one I know), old parts left in box in boot as well so I know they've been changed. Saves me £300 so an acceptable outcome I think.
