Dashcams!

Looking to get a dashcam for my new motor that is coming in a few months , im look at the Blackvue DR650GW with the Power Magic Pro.

Anyone got a similar set up ? How easy is it to install on a Golf Mk7 ? Or is it worth getting it professionally installed.

Thanks for any info.

I have the blackvue dr3500 fhd

Thats it in my 7 series, and powered from the overhead lighting area, so no dangling cables.

Manual install is easy, and they can be hidden away nicely. Mine did go faulty once (after being out of the car for a few weeks) but was replaced quickly without a quibble from the UK supplier.

I did the same in my old XF too:

Much neater and more discreet than the big sucker mount units, and with no screen its less to go wrong and means you get better optics and other important stuff!

Look pretty good and discreet. That's what I'm trying to go for. Was it a breeze to install yourself or shall I get someone who can install it properly.

Some lorry drivers are just as bad as white van men...

In other news, not had interference since replacing the 0806 mount. £18 down, maybe the original mount was just faulty... Will have to wait another few months to see if this one fails the same way.

If you can use a volt meter to find a 12v line that is live with the ignition, then you are laughing :)

Takes about an hour, including faffing with finding the right wire, routing the cable through the trim (usually already a small hole for the mirror power). You just need some cable trims, zip ties, a multi-meter/volt meter, a pair of snips/pliers and a screwdriver to flipping out the trim.

Then just stick it all in place with the provided tape on the mount, stick the cable guides in the places you want and voila!

If you can find the cable, and join some wires its an easy job.

Hardwired my dashcam last night, and it was really easy to do until I realised I hooked it up to a fuse that appears to be running all the time and is not ignition controller (the driver's door panel). I then went to move it to the 12v power adapter but couldn't get the bloody fuse out, so I'm going to go at it again tonight with some pliers or tweezers. Other than this minor hold up it was very easy to do.

I ended up buying a kit made by Nextbase, even though my dashcam is a Rexing. However, it's just a mini USB power cable so will work with any dashcam with a mini USB port.

Tried to hardwire mine with a cheapo Chinese hard wiring kit. The camera wouldn't get power no matter what I tried.

Gonna try grab one from Amazon and hopefully that'll get me up and running.

So ive just fitted mine and i'm not sure what i think tbh. Don't get me wrong the quality is great and all but i can't help but feel its not as discreet as i would have liked.

Whats the Halfords fitting service like with these? Looking at a 200 or 220, and want it hardwired really. Would be on my mums car though, which is brand new and understandably she is concerned.

Having done it myself in about 15-20 minutes I would strongly advise against paying that much (or anything) to have it hardwired by someone else. It was a piece of ****!

EDIT: Just been on their site and it says fitting is £30, I thought you meant they were charging £200+ to fit it. £30 seems reasonable, but like I said it's proper easy to do yourself with a kit that costs about £10-15.

Thanks for the reply SS, yeah being a new discovery though I don't want to be messing around with.. With that said.. I also don't want them messing about if they don't really know what they are doing.

Best bet is to go in and ask how they do it.

My assumption is they don't hard wire it in terms of soldering to lights etc. you would need to confirm about warranty voidance I guess

chances of them havingi t done before are low

imo it is VERY simple, so just find the fuse box, find the fuse you want and connect it all up using the adapters discussed above.

you can guide the cables etc easily.

I doubt they know what they are doing with regards to the car if its just a normal Halfords.
Unless its changed since when I used to fit for them (circa 10 years ago) you had some basic electrics course so you could hardwire a stereo in etc but that was about it.
Finding out how trim came off was trial and error but now would be Google I guess.
You will take more care than they will I would guess, although I was very paranoid about messing up someones car they wont all be.

If you have 5 metres of automotive twin cable, you can get the power from the towbar plug in the boot on the drivers side.

Grey plug:

Purple/Red 12v +
Green/Brown Ignition.

I wouldn't be going to Halfords, that vehicle is pretty much just out and I doubt they will have done many if at all.
