Dawn of War II Beta Thread

Very cheap - Windows Live is free! :D

Silly boy, it's free.

uh.. i know?

My point is, why do i need a windows live account to play a game? Why cant i have an account much like in the original Dawn Of War which worked perfectly fine and needn't be changed?

I don't want to keep signing up to third parties to play a game i've paid for. It seems inherently pointless. Smacks of EA logic too, which is what bothers me most.

You need a Windows Live account to play? Seriously, how cheap.

Thanks very much relic, but i dont think i'll bother paying £40 for your game. Cheers all the same.

Where do you get the £40 price from? The game isnt like the Xbox where you have to pay MS a fee for the year. You just create an account for FREE and buy the game. £22.99 to £35.99 depending where you get from. You have had to do this for years with some games like GS signups. Nothing new.

Hope that helps

I just made the £40 price up because it's a random value for brand new games. I dont think that's really the point i was making so it's kinda moot!

The only other game where i've had to sign up to a third party account holder was for Battlefield 2142. No other game.

You required one for Dawn of War 1, too.

So that they can use the greatly superior match making of Games for Windows live, and hopefully solve all the online problems people had with Company of Heroes and Dawn of War.

Which cause a lot of headaches for people and probably lost them customers.

All RTSs require sign ups.

oops already put 5.1 hours in this evening :o

Wow really intense, no need to babysit on you base just action action action. Brilliant. It needs more maps mind, lots more.

Edit: Also how do you get it to show fps?

I was using Fraps, for Company of Heroes you had to use these two commands.

First enable:
statgraph()
Then use:
statgraph_channel("fps")

Not sure if this will work with Dawn of War, but it's on the same engine so I imagine it will.

A lot of games require you to create an account before online game play. What difference does it make if you have to create an account using GFWL or a DoW account? Both take equal amounts of time. GFWL will let you use the same account in more games, instead of creating new ones for every game. Which to me, sounds like a good thing.

Tbh most RTSs in the past 4 years have been action action action. Even in Age of Empires 3 (one of the more traditional RTSs) it was in your best interest to keep up the action.

I don't like the general direction RTSs are all taking to become more casual. DOW2 is still a very enjoyable game though. Just lacking in depth.

You required one for Dawn of War 1, too.

No you dont.

In any case my gripe was quite simple. I dont see why it requires an account with a third party company to play a multiplayer game in DoW2. You dont need one in SC, Or Diablo, Or WC3... so the "you need one in all RTS" claim was false too.

I'm not really bothered what the Live account gives me, to be honest. The point is there was nothing wrong with creating an account in the game, like in Dawn of War, and playing that way. Sure the option to use windows Live to "enhance your multiplayer experience" would have been just fine, but to force it open people is a little unforgiving.

I always seem to start these arguments in this subforum. I'm merely saying i dont want to sign up to Windows Live. Take it how you like!

On my system this runs flawlessly with every thing at max (ultra) even when hosting 6 man games (q9450 @ 3.2 ghz, 8 gig ram, gtc280 OC).
It's a very very different game to DOW1; It's pure micromanagement - but that isn't a bad thing.
I have a feeling that this game is much closer to the traditional table top 40k (which I dabbled in when younger).
In DOW1 troops were pretty much throw-away and spammable. Just pump out new units and keep sending them in. This game is all about the units, the terrain, the tactics. It's much more involved and tactical.
The game is good. Different, but good. But I think they've only half-heartedly embraced the direction they have taken.
It's about the troops, yet they only have a limited number of generic units. This limits the possibilities.

Doesn't really work though unless you make everyone use the same account, because then you're basically splitting your userbase. And if you think that's a good idea for any game you're crazy.

Using Live also adds the ability for Microsoft Achievement points. A single account to use across multiple games. Makes the game cheaper to develop.

I'm pretty certain you had to register on battle.net or something to play online in SC and WC games. All other RTSs I've played have required some sort of registration too. GFW Live just means that instead of registering exclusively for each game/series, you have one gamertag that will eventually be used for all games under GFW.

Btw misterjingo I agree almost completely. I think COH was more micromanagement heavy - and that was a game where you had to do a lot more stuff.

OK, wow, that is going too far - I lost connection to Steam part way through a ranked match and was automatically kicked.

Edit: Everyone playing DoW2 Ranked got kicked. What a terrible system, and totally the fault of Relic.
