Dawn of War II Beta Thread

I cant even play MP, single player skirmish works fine but as soon as other people are in the game, it crashes at a random time, from in the lobby, to in the game half way through.

It doesn't give me any warning, or any 'the program has encountered an error' stuff, it just closes and thats that :(.

We were playing some more tonight... The lack of units just ruins it for me, my mate said much the same thing, even before you take into account the lack of customisation compared to DOW and COH the selection is tiny, then you discover that you can't, for instance, equip devastators as effective tank killers- you either buy a heavy bolter unit or a heavy plasma gun unit, where in DOW you'd buy your marine unit and then give it whatever heavy weapons you chose. So it's not just a small number of units, but also the small number of units have less options.

The interface isn't good either, the map is less clear than the previous games and once the units get in close it's a mess. Pretty, sure, but unclear. There's actually less information available visually but despite that what little's there is harder to access. Interfaces should be functional first, pretty second.

Still going to give it a few more tries before I start really writing it off, since I'm an ex-warhammer nerd and huge RTS fan, but it just doesn't impress yet.

i have a 4870, but i dont think this game runs as smooth as COH, any ideas do get a FPS boost ? which options to turn off etc? i like to play RTS at 60 fps.

I agree.

Love the 40k universe and rts's but they have really wrecked this one :(

I don't get this thing with the lack of units unless you're comparing it to soulstorm, which was 3 expansions worth... There are as many as vanilla DoW had, only difference being that you will have to be a particular hero to gain access to some.

There are a few bugs, a bit of a balance problem with anything tier2+ being near useless since the games are decided with that clash of starting units within the first 5 minutes ... but apart from that this is an awesome game.

The lack of units become an issue for me due to the direction the game has taken.
Base building has gone, tiers are pretty much irrelevant - so it all comes down to troop utilisation and tactics.
The problem with this is that there are few troops, and few options for those troops. So every player of the same race near enough has to play in exactly the same way to achieve the same results.
If they'd given more troops types, or more options to upgrade troops - then there would be many ways to play each race - which would give the game a tremendous amount of depth.

My brothers 4850 seems to be struggling quite badly too - had to set most of his settings to low. Looks kinda washed out/bland now and still not totally smooth.

My 8800GTS on the other hand is handing it on high at 1920x1200 fine though :S

I agree with a lot of the criticism I've seen, firstly i enjoy the game a lot and can see myself killing serious hours on this game.
But, what the hell have relic done? They have seriously dumbed down the gameplay mechanics, no macro whatsoever except for a few gens? WTF?
Unit variety and upgrade options are nowhere near adequate, this game is pc only but it seems to have been 'consolified'.

I like the game this game but I loved the original.

Yes. With the improved cover aspects of COH, the greater physics, the ability to garrison buildings and blow them down.

This is what people thought DOW2 was going to be, I assume.

yes but why is there no macro? Base building helps to add structure to tiers, with total freedom to concentrate on micro it takes away an entire gameplay aspect. I played it last night for about an hour, I really like the game partially because I love the 40k universe, but instead of improving on the amazing original, they have created something a bit too different.

Had a quick go on this yesterday, just with the CPU as not got anyone in my games for windows live list. Wish It would work off of the steam list.

Looks good to me, had good fun smashing in some Eldar skulls. I like the the new layouts and i like having a proper hero unit to play with but am not sure on the loss of some units and the inability to customise units the way we did before.

I think ATI need to bring out new drivers. You can tell this game is optimized for Nvidia. Ah well overall im reallying enjoying this game, its growing on me game by game. Eldar seemed to be abit over powered but overall its really fun game.

Do people just want DoW1 with better graphics and Tyranids? :)

No I expected it to out do DoW 1, a pretty reasonable request I think. Instead we got:

Less armies
Less units
Less options for those units
Less units on screen
Less maps
Less game modes
Less combat animations
no base building

I wouldn't be surprised if the single player was only 4 missions at this rate. I do kind of enjoy the beta for 1 or 2 battles until I realise that it's very samey, but not sure it's worth the price of a full game.
