***Dayz: Stand Alone Thread***

There were several number of things I didn't like about the mod, including the horrible inventory system and how the entire game felt clunky and horrible to use. The new inventory is so much better as well as having vicinity loot that that works. Its also better graphically than the mod. If this was the finished game then it wouldn't be worth it, but its not its in Alpha.

... Fair enough, but basically what you're saying is that it'll be worth the £20 if it improves significantly, so would you agree that if Dean sods off to spend all your hard earned and you're still playing a bug-ridden mess years from now people will still say "Guys don't worry, it's alpha, Dean'll come through if you just believe"

If OcUK started charging me a membership I wouldn't need to make one post and I would consider it good value. I already pay for use of the forum anyway so it doesn't really matter.

Perhaps it wasn't the most expertly constructed analogy ever :p

What's wrong with supporting developers ? if I played the mod and spent enough time inside the game , even though it is free I would still seek out the modding teams website and see if they have a donation button.

Nothing is wrong with supporting developers, but a voluntary donation button on a passion-project mod is optional... Support if you want to but really the modders are in it because they strive to create something amazing that they would like and they value the bug-testing and feedback of the players most because that's what helps them get there...

Slapping an arguably high price tag on something you know a lot of people are already invested in entirely on the good faith that you'll finish it properly is another thing all together... If vast numbers choose to pay it are you showing the developer that you support them and motivating them to do the work, or are you proving to them that what was already there is "good enough" without significantly more effort - after all, people seem happy enough with it and are defending it regardless

counter-strike started as a mod.
team fortress started as a mod.
many other games likely have as well.

I bet I could find at least a dozen games that were once halflife mods

Assuming this is a response to me, I'm not sure I understand your point?

Yes, some games start from mods... but how many of those go straight from a pretty fun but very un-polished and buggy mess to a much more highly priced fun but still fairly un-polished buggy mess? In a lot of cases once the idea gets picked up and pushed forward the developer invests a decent amount of time making a more stable version with extra refinements and features before they expect people to pay

I'm starting to feel like a right troll but I find it an interesting topic and can't help but play a little devils advocate here... I'd like DayZ to succeed as well as I like the concept - I'm just not sure I approve of how they're going about it

nah nah it is good to read posts like this instead of the fanboys. If WarZ was released like this, by the way it was not it was actually in a better state for £12. For starters it had loot respawns and zeds that respawned if not it would have got ripped apart. Well actually it did get ripped apart. But DayZ with no loot/zed spawns and £8 more expensive is fine... I think they even fixed server hoppers within the first two weeks even that was ripped apart, but on DayZ it is totally fine to still have server hoppers. Funny really, although WarZ did turn into a royal mess but on launch it was in a much better condition.

Now I am not trying to compare just saying that WarZ Alpha was much more of a package and it was totally ripped to pieces, saying that it was the DayZ fanboys who ripped it apart I guess :)

Sigh some of us can't play without rubber banding, so I've looked for another server and all it says is " WAITING FOR HOST "

Has been like that for awhile now on and off, most likely a bad host

POPULAR
New:

Design: Balancing of player spawns (ongoing)
Server: Dead player cleanup (time based)
Design: M9130 Bayonet can now open cans

Fixed:

Server: Dedicated Server crash related to player skeleton
Server: Player location rubberbanding
Server: Large delay in item manipulation and "inventory tetris"

List to be fleshed out as update progresses.

The host in this case is ok, unfortunately it's a typical VR engine problem.
