Well given the amount of time this game has been out (its now been in Alpha for over 3 years!), the fact they are still working on texture, sounds and lighting enhancement is frankly amazing.
This is basic engine stuff that should have been addressed well before adding in new loot items and the like, also the sheer amount of bugs that still exist is also mind blowing again given that it was released in Dec 2013.
The game has so much promise, but its been totally ruined by lacklustre development, awful support, mediocre choices and no end date for the process.
THEY ARE DEVELOPING A NEW ENGINE!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for ‘shouting’ but although the devs communication has never been the best (terrible on many occasions) they have been consistently clear the whole way through that this will take time as the standalone game development changed part way and was not able to do what they intended so have been creating an entirely new engine which will form the basis for that gaming houses future games (Arma etc). Leading up to the release of 0.62 on experimental they appointed a new communications staff member who has been active in the community and things have really improved – when you think about it though, why would they invest in communications staff when the game was so far away from beta?
They have had to splice the old Arma engine and the new enfusion engine together at varying stages of development which has given rise to the huge headaches experienced but of course couldn’t pull the plug (temporarily) on the game as they want to continue supporting the community.
I get why people have given up with it but 0.62 is really very good patch but remember it isn't at the modding stage yet so they are not directly comparable - don't forget, DayZ mod was wrought with hackers which I've almost never come across on private servers, plus it hasn’t aged particularly well and almost nobody plays it these days.
The new update is far more than just grass moving. If someone hasn't played the game since 0.59 then it is a different game now. Inventory different, huge map changes, overall performance much better, PvP almost no dsync, z's running on new controller so much better, many of the annoying bugs have gone with most remaining to be resolved when new player controller comes in on 0.63, the map details are glorious with some of the nicest scenery out there. Little things such as being able to determine direction of fire, hearing the crack and/or fire of a gun (depending where you are, loot spawns), gun sway after running, gun mechanics/bullet drop are great and unlike many other games. It is a good game and very playable now.
The biggest issue some have with this is the intermittent crashes but it seems this is server side and mainly on 32-bit game so 64-bit best option (I've never had a crash since 0.62 and that's with 50-60 hours so far since going stable).
There can't be a Battle Royale mod for this until beta, when it can be modded but quite honestly since Player Unknown has his own standalone game (based on Unreal 4 engine) I highly doubt he will develop this for DayZ SA mod, particularly with the news it is coming to console. He may sell the rights but quite frankly I don’t see why he would want to dilute what he has worked on with his standalone.
I know it's been hugely frustrating the way this game has gone, but honestly, if you haven't played this since 0.59 or even never played it, if you like survival games this really is the daddy and is in a great place right now.
If someone wants a game with an ‘end game’ then a sandbox survival game isn’t for you.
