Dell U2711..is it worth the money?

A gtx580 will play all those games at full res... With aa and af for the most part.

The 7970 will let you crank up the aa and af a bit.

However future games will be helped by the 7970 of course.

Considering how small and improvement the 7970 is over the gtx580... I am expecting a decent performance improvement from Kepler. We still don't know when though.

The 590 may still be able to outperform it slightly in sli optimised games though.

Of course Kepler will be single card though, so no micro stuttering and no profiles.

I want to see how it plays out before I replace my entire rig.

I could be wrong... Ive just never seen nvidia release a new chip that isn't a noticeable improvement over their previous gen (of course refreshes don't count).

I hear you, i have decided on the components of my new sandy bridge rig now. The monitor and the GPU are the two things i just cannot decide.
I have made the decision to go for this monitor and sell my 2407WFP, all that remains is the graphics card. Decisions decisions eh lol

Some people have trouble... More than nvidia (it would seem)... But we're still only talking avert small number.

I imagine most will boil down to people not knowing what they are doing... I've never experienced a real issue with ati or nvidia... Just the odd bit of instability or incongruency in releases from ati.

No major issues with AMD here either, or Nvidia for that matter.

The only issue I've had for a while was when RAGE was released. Texture pop-in was all over the place, but it was soon sorted in the next driver update and a game patch.

Just a quick question - is the Dell U2711 a glossy or a matte screen? I recently bought a glossy screen and just couldn't cope with the reflections and the glare from it. Any help is appreciated :).

Im curious how the Anti-glare coating works under artificial light?
My rig is in the basement with no natural light, the room has 2 x 60W lightbulbs when I bother to use them - how does this affect the AG coating, does it make it less of an issue.
Less than a week away from getting a new monitor now :-)

Specifically designed for artificial and natural light :p

As you can see from the rest of the thread... it's not an "issue" unless you are specifically attuned to using a similar monitor that doesn't have it... like the Apple cinema display.

I still don't notice it unless I'm actively looking for it...

So so so tempted with this to replace my Samsung 24" one.

I will be mostly using it for WoW, Star Trek Online, Old Republic, some CoD2&4 general browsing, watching movies, some light web design and bit of photo editing.

Have a 6870 1Gb card at the moment, but I never bother with AA in most games, never see the point.

So should this screen do?

Cheers

Kimbie

Ok so just picked one of these up and it is lovely, with one small problem. I can set it to 2560x1440 with my ATI5970 quite happily and it works fine, however every time i reboot windows seems to be back in 1920x1080.

Connected via dual link DVI

I've tried removing drivers, doing a driver sweep etc, any ideas?

Peculiar... have you tried forcing the resolution in the registry?
It's really odd - never seen it before and it's fine at 2560, just reverts after every reboot. It looks as if it's a detection thing as occasionally after a reboot on the windows login screen I'm at full res, then there's a flicker and I'm back to 1920.

Not tried forcing it in the registry - any pointers how best to do that?

Not certain of the exact keys off the top of my head - google should be able to help there.

It's strange - do you have displayport output on the 5970? Any other methods of connection you can try?

It's possible you have a faulty one that's reporting the native resolution wrong... but could be soooo many different things :(

Hmmm... tried a different rev of driver and still the same problem. Can't use the DisplayPort at the moment as the 5970 has mini DP and the screen full size so will need a different cable (only have a full sized DP cable).

Certainly seems to be something around how Windows is detecting the screen as full res sticks just fine until log in screen at which point theres the flicker and a drop to 1920.

Doesn't seem to be a common problem either, not seeing anyone else obviously having had the same problem after some searching.

Ended up being a Windows thing "fingers crossed". It seemed to be remembering the default resolutions from my previous monitors set up. Nuked Windows (it was well over due to be honest) and so far so good.

First real Windows 7 "oddity" i've had since it released.

Lovely screen though :)
