Dell U2711..is it worth the money?

Having had mine for just over a week - i love it. However having got used to it i dont think its big enough!!

I had the same thing with other 27" screens. First you are amazed at how big it is, and after just a week you start longing for something bigger. Can't wait until 42" monitors with decent resolutions are available at a reasonable price... (10 years?)

Just buy the Dell, the AG coating is a non issue since it's performance in other areas isn't even questionable. It's a top quality piece of kit, I'm referring to my U3011 model but obviously the same is true for the 27 inch version.

Silly worrying about stuff like that in this situation.

If you go for the Hazro, you'll have BUNCH of other genuine worries to be concerned about, will it work? will it stop working after a few months? what will the RMA procedure be like, we already know the answers to that too well!

With a Dell you know you're sorted for 3 years from a top end proffessional manufacturer that doesn't mess about, delivers on it's promises, puts the customer first. You pay the price for it hence the high price relatively speaking. But that's it, you get what you pay for.

Sorry if that sounds like marketing talk but in this case it's true and you should really just pay up.

Bare in mind this is coming from a money scrimping scrooge (Me!) who wasted years on crappy monitors like the Hanns-G 28.5 inch model from a few years ago with it's crappy 3 year warranty, yes it only cost £230 or so but I've had countless RMA's, countless broken promises of a "next day onsite warranty" actually meaning waiting for new stock to come in at the outsourced repair centre with nobody accountable and much buck passing.

I paid £840 for my U3011, and it's the best money I've ever spent on computer hardware that wasn't for the purpose of making money by selling it on (obviously). I've been wasting money overclocking for 10-12 years and that's how it is.

In this situation you really do just have to pay!

Now put a sock in it and order the damn thing! ;)

A U2711 and a 7970 - what a team! I must say that the 7970 is coping quite superbly in BF3 at 2560x1440 on ultra, better than I expected! Averaging around 56fps, I'm still in awe right now at how gorgeous it looks!

Could we have some privacy please, I want to do naughty things to it :p

Sounds like a great pairing! i just got rid of my 570 and am running it off a 8400GS

Tbh im looking to use a couple of 24inch screens in portrait alongside this, and eventually get a 3d tv too. So will need a card with 4 monitor support - the 7900 series are looking a good bet :)

How are you finding the 'fuzzy text' on white backgrounds issue??

From CNET

Cons 16 square inches smaller than the 2709W due to the different aspect ratios. Text can appear a bit fuzzy on white backgrounds (this is a slight effect). Height adjustment is limited, compared to some of Dell's earlier 24" monitors.

As long as it isn't too bad Im willing to put up with it for the other benefits, but it just suddenly occurred to me while reading that review that so may web pages are white..

Mind you, one of my monitors is a Dell 1901FP, so Im guessing that it will be a massive step up from that..

Just need to measure up and check it will fit now..

A single 7970 shines quite well at this res.

Personally I picked up a cheap GTX580 and am waiting for Kepler before I buy a pair of whatever's the best :)

The 580 performs admirably in all but Crysis 2 at the full res... BF3 with full FXAA but no MSAA = nice and smooth.

Depends on if you feel the need to wait for Kepler or not - I did as I expect it to wipe the floor with the 7970.

Well i will be playing mostly racing type games, so dirt, f1, nfs etc and sports type games like nfl, fifa, tennis. Im not really a shoot em up type gamer but having seen some of the graphics on these games i may give them ago.
Hmm, is this kepler fella due to bring significant performance advantages over the monsters that are out already then, the 590 and 7970?

A gtx580 will play all those games at full res... With aa and af for the most part.

The 7970 will let you crank up the aa and af a bit.

However future games will be helped by the 7970 of course.

Considering how small and improvement the 7970 is over the gtx580... I am expecting a decent performance improvement from Kepler. We still don't know when though.

The 590 may still be able to outperform it slightly in sli optimised games though.

Of course Kepler will be single card though, so no micro stuttering and no profiles.

I want to see how it plays out before I replace my entire rig.

I could be wrong... Ive just never seen nvidia release a new chip that isn't a noticeable improvement over their previous gen (of course refreshes don't count).
