Dell U2711..is it worth the money?

Yes, that and the fact that my Dell 2407WFP was 5 years old. It was an awesome screen at 1920x1200 but I just felt it was time to upgrade.

I wanted a bigger and more up to date monitor. So an upgrade from 24" to 27" just seemed like the next logical step.

Loved my 2407WFP, not to mention Dell's zero pixel guarantee. I also didn't want a TN panel which would have been a downgrade from S-PVA, or to increase the panel size while at the same time downgrading the resolution.

I wasn't that fussed with 120Hz since my system isn't used exclusively for gaming, so the higher res comes in useful for desktop work.

I Had also looked at the Hazro models, but they have QA issues and can't offer the same guarantee as Dell with regards to dead bright or stuck pixels. When it boils down to it I just wouldn't trust a Hazro monitor as much as I trust a Dell equivalent.

So when you add all those things together, the U2711 was the logical choice.

A 120Hz monitor would have been nice, but I'd rather have the IPS panel and higher res. Pity there isn't a monitor that can combine all three yet.

This!

I much prefer the glossy coating of the hazro but this Dell seems the more logical purchase. I wish Dell would offer this monitor with and without the AG coating :( I would buy one straight away!

Even if IPS could do 120Hz I somewhat doubt we'd be seeing it on 2560x1440 screens. Very, very niche market. Who wants 120Hz?
1) People that want 3D
2) Gamers

#1 will be happy with passive 3D as well which is simpler to do, can be done with games as well without affecting performance.
#2 would need one hell of a rig, you take the two most intensive things on the market, a massive resolution and a need to run it at (or close to) 120FPS. That's might just be too much of a niche market to be financially interesting.

Ahhh - it is decision day/payday :D

U2711 is on special
U2410M is on special
BenQ 24XL10T is on special, but can i live with a lower res

Off to have a think, but the U2711 is a favourite at the moment

Well folks I have been stressing out over whether to get this monitor for a long while now, and the ag coating etc etc, but have now gone and done it - should arrive friday. Sure hope I have done the right thing and won't be dissapointed:confused:

Oh well I bottled it

Ended up going for the 24" U2412m seeing as it was so cheap..

Partly becuase it gived me the option for 3 monitors if I decide to do that
Mostly as my Uncle sent me loads of stuff regarding developments in display tech that we should be seeing in nthe next 2 years, so this was a stop gap buy for me

Im happy enough, as I was impressed with the 24" dell when I saw it..

Fair enough. Pretty decent choice with the U2412M.

If it was a 24" I was after, I would have gone with that one too.

How are you finding it?

what was your last monitor? :)

Hi there,

Early days yet,but initially I was underwhelmed with the picture quality - but the desktop real estate is very nice, great for editing photos. I do have a few doubts about the ag coating which a lot seem to moan about, but overall I dont find the coating that bad. The text is perhaps not quite as crisp as you would like, but perfectly acceptable I think,Colours etc look pretty good out of the box, but I am considering whether to calibrate it, but not sure if I should as apparently these screens do not have hardware lookup tables, so calibrating may make it worse????

Overall I am very pleased with it, but only had it since yesterday - so early days yet,but IPS are deffo high quality screens - my previous screen which I still have was a Samsung 244T which itself was/is a good ips screen 24".

Will perhaps post more when I have settled in with it - anybody care to comment on whether I should calibrate it with my i1 display 2 calibrater?

Comments welcome.

About the issue of input lag on the DELLs.

You wont notice it much all you ever do is game on the internet in FPS. Because the games are synced and pings times are never going to be less than 16ms consistently.

I played Street Fighter 4 recently offline in a friends house and it was an eye opener at how much input lag there is on the DELLs.

Because your offline and your playing 1 v 1 next to each other you see and feel every frame. Where you can see it more apparent is in its "Challenge mode" where you have to do 1-frame or 2-frame combo links like Vegas or Rufus trials. I wasted about 30 mins on one trial for the Vega (18 here) on the DELL. On my mates illyama it came out within 1 minute.

Not something everyone will notice especially gaming... but when your in a LAN environment DELLs will handicap you.
