*** Dell UltraSharp U2410 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor @ £447.99 inc VAT ***

Anybody had problems getting replacement from dell?

They told me my replacement would be delivered today, now they are saying it will be the 7th of october.

The NEC's look good. not that much more expensive (about £100 give or take for the 2490wxi2) although I wonder if that will guarantee zero panel defects. ahh
I don't think they do, although keep in mind the Dell actually has a zero LIT pixel guarantee. Fortunately Dells own staff get confused by the definition between lit and dead pixels, so you can usually swap out a monitor even if there's 1 dead pixel.

One I forgot about that would probably be better than even the NEC is the LG W2420R..
http://www.lge.com/products/model/detail/w2420r.jhtml

It's RGB LED backlit and covers a gamut of about 130%. However the price was supposed to be around £1,500. There's also a cheaper W2420P meant for consumers but, for whatever reason, it hasn't seen the light of day. Most of LG's products (particularly IPS) seem to have exceptionally poor UK availability for whatever reason.

Something I found out today which I think others should be aware of; Dell will only offer a sealed replacement up until 30 days after the purchase date, after that they can only offer a refurbished unit
Well, unless you fight them. I was also told that any problems must be notified within the first 7 days. More troubling is that I was told (I'm pretty sure incorrectly) that the 7/30 day period starts when the monitor is purchased from Dell. This means, if you buy from another business who bought from Dell, and they've had that monitor in stock for 30 days, Dell could say it's outside the allowed period! However that just sounds wrong to me, so I'm fairly sure the person who told me this didn't know what they were talking about. Their CS staff don't seem too used to dealing with people who didn't buy from Dell directly.

Another thing is Dell will offer you a refund if you're still unhappy with all the replacements they've given you. That's pretty cool. The only problem is that any refund goes to whoever purchased the screen from them. This means if you don't buy direct from Dell directly yourself it's pretty much a useless guarantee, and of course nobody will buy direct from Dell unless they want to massively overpay for the screen!

Hmm, that shouldn't be if they have any UK stock left, so try asking them to hurry it along, they CAN request to do it if they really want to and there's stock available. They do usually say "10 working days" and advise a date based on that, however often it should show up long before then. The thing I don't like is that sometimes they just send you something without warning you it's going to be delivered..

Well I was offered my replacement on Monday morning. The chap I spoke to - and exchanged emails with - said it would be seven days. I regret not asking if this would be to dispatch, or until delivery.

I'm gonna email him tomorrow and find out how things stand. He did tell me that I would be sent an email to advise the replacement was on its way and when I could expect to receive it.

The faulty monitor (green-pink-green-pink!) is to be picked up on Tuesday (this was a day I stipulated) as I'm also having a Dell XPS tower delivered on that day so will be at home.

I juat hope the replacement doesn't come too long after Tuesday!

(after all this I expect the replacement will have same problem, or failing that an infuriatingly small number of dodgy pixels! :p )

You were told correctly.

Dell "sell" their monitors to distributors who then sell on to retailers like OcUK.

The 7/30 day period starts when Dell make the sale to the distributor NOT when the retailer sells to you.

This is why Dell ask for the work order number so they can track when they sold the monitor to the distributor.

If your monitor has been at the distributor for any length of time then the 30 day period for a brand new replacement monitor will not apply and you'll only be eligible for a refurb.

In my opinion this very underhand as you have no control over how long the monitor has been at the distributor.

You could buy a brand new monitor from a retailer that turns out to be defective but only qualify for a refurb under their guarantee.

As I have said before, Dell's "Premium Panel Guarantee" is of little substance and their "customer support" leaves a lot to be desired.

If this is true, there has to be something in the Sale of Goods Act that will "beat" Dell's guarantee...? I might just phone my local office and have a quick chat before clicking the button. :p
That's what I would think too.. For example, I just don't see someone buying a Dell laptop from a high street store and then being told by Dell "actually we supplied that laptop to that store 4 months ago, so you're not covered by the same replacement policy". There's just something about that which seems incorrect.

Given the fact that almost none of their Indian staff seem to know the difference between a dead and a lit pixel, much less anything else, I doubt they can be relied on for specific details about how policies should actually be handled.

As long as you have proof of purchase though, I'm pretty sure the date would start from the date of your actual purchase. I actually asked them to email me details of their policy about 2 weeks ago, and (of course!) the request was completely ignored.

Received replacement today which was a bit out of the blue.

Plugged monitor in power light constantly on and that was it, no signal otherwise.

Back to dell, what a nightmare.

Thanks, Baddass! Has anybody else here measured black depth? 0.23 is a bit disappointing, especially compared with the HP. Flatpanels got 0.17 for the U2410 black depth, so perhaps there is significant variance between monitors?

Hi, I received mine yesterday. Previously I had LG W2600HP 26" IPS and now this 24" seems smaller like 22". :)
Anyway, I like the blacks, I keep it in sRGB mode, but I don't like that in Lagom black level test (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php) all the blacks are displayed with grain and I can see them from square #6. I use brightness 50 / contrast 50.
What can I do to skip that grain but also to maintain sRGB color ?

It's made on 12 June 2009, made in Czech Republic, rev. A00

Here is the calibration which I've received:

MKay: What about that chart ? Is a green/pink issue ?

And that's the grain I'm talking about:
