Low/Medium is just about playable but not brilliant.
I'm actually quite impressed given this is a relatively low spec laptop.
1.8ghz intel core 2 T7100, 2gb ram, nvidia 8600m gt 256mb.

What drivers were you using Thiras?

Best thing to do is experiment with the settings. I'm pretty sure you can get something playable while looking nice with a mixture of low and medium settings.

What resolution was that as well? 1280x800?

Try turning things to low but leaving shaders and shadows to medium.

Not downloaded the demo but will do so when I get a chance later this week.

hmm i'm thinking of ordering this

can anyone who rang up and managed to haggle them down a bit:D I dont really want to spend over £600 at a mega stretch, or can anyone spec any similar systems between £500-£600 ?

i got that exact one except i wanted vista home premium(i really wouldnt use the business things and figured media centre MAY come in handy somewhere down the line) a 1440x900 screen, and 8600GT for about £600. Come with the webcam too(its decent :O) even though i didnt ask for it.
Dont think bluetooth is on it tho :(

Should easily get it for £600 or there abouts, i was a bit gutted as its not long since i got mine but the prices took a dive after id got mine, and i was so chuffed about the price but i wound up not saving much against the new prices!

it comes to £640 roughly but ideally i didn't want to break £600 and i also wanted the 1440x900 screen but that pushed it up even more. Did you phone your order or via website ?

My Vostro just arrived with XP installed and I really love it so far, despite all the crap installed it still runs really well as far as I can tell. lol

What I want to know however is what a couple of things are... First of all Media Manager and Media Direct..... Are they connected? Do they have any worthwhile functionality?

Do the Roxio utilities have any decent uses? lol

Is it worth while keeping Dell Quickset?

I remember reading earlier, but can't find it, that installing modified graphics drivers stops something working... What is this?

Other than this everything so far is awesome. :)

As for why I picked XP, with the software I run most regularly there are too many incompatabilities as far as I can tell through my experiences.

quickset means you can use those silver buttons on the front, i use the volume one quite often!
Roxio:no idea, what are they? :D
Would like to know about media direct(that the partition right?) Like the idea of booting it as a dvd-player, though it would be better if i could boot it into a divx menu :(
Iv got drivers from ....urmm. laptopvideo2go or somewhere, work a treat,, not sure if theyv stopped something working.
Iv got XP on mine atm, though it came with vista, blamed vista for my hideous pro evo lockups and slowdowns, XP started having the problems at weekend though, found out what it was now, its either overheating or not getting enough power - it was whenever i had it on for quite a while and had the sound on, pressed that handy silver mute button(go quickset!) in mid of match and whatd you know, no more hideous freezes etc all night!

I've had several laptops in the past and maybe I haven't noticed it, but:

I've just gone from using the fantastic 9-cell battery I have to using mains and the screen has just brightened up tenfold :)

Is that normal?

I think I might have noticed it more because I'm in a darkish room...

SW.

This is normal, it's a power saving feature. You can change the settings in the bios, or Vista is quite good at it in it's power menu in the Control Panel.

Ok so quickset stays on my keep list. :)

Media Direct I'll have to look into a bit... I pressed the media direct button on the laptop whilst in windows and it opens what looked like a media manager thing. :-/

Laptopvideo2go is what I was talking about..... It would be really helpful if someone remembered what they disabled or if I'm going crazy. lol

Which one is the media-direct button? If you hold at boot its meant to boot into dvd-player mode, giv it a try!

well i gave them a call, spec'd it up and said i dont want to spend more then £600 but all i got was trying to be sold extra warranty, no drop in price and telling me a vostro motherboard isn't good for gaming and dedicated gpu's and that i should by an xps for 749 ex VAT:o

hah, the people on the phone dont have a clue etc. Person i had wanted me to tell him everything I did so he could recommend me a laptop, i was like erm i want a vostro1500, so shutup. he was a right stubborn pig!
Person who eventually sold me one was trying to ram a 1.6C2D down my throat, aswell as leave the 8400GS, But trying to sell me loads of crap with it too, Id already told her repeatedly it would be use for games & 3d-modelling.
Just ring up and tell them you like the dells but theres one of practically exact spec for £610 elsewhere or something.
