Did anyone else get Sky for F1?

You know that RTL has adverts during the race, right?

Terribly long breaks as well - much worse than anything we have here. I lived in Germany for 5 years and RTL F1 coverage was practically unwatchable - I ended up forking out for Premiere World (now Sky Germany). So I guess I'm in a position of experience to say RTL over Sky is not going to work for any hardcore F1 fan. ;)

Yeah I read somewhere that during the 80 minutes that was the race at Monza last year RTL had over 20 minutes of adverts!

Saying your going with RTL over Sky 'because of the adverts' is rather foolish.

RTL had potential (hence my old thread) but with the 5 Live commentary not being so great and Sky Go also being 'free', it was a no brainer.

I am not opposed to adverts and repeats just don't wish to pay for them.
Humax box was purchased due digital switchover not for RTL :)

RTL is on a different Astra satellite to freesat - how did you set up your dish have you got a multi arm setup? Was that free?

Yes it was free, took it from a house I was working on as they said it was ugly and used Freeview.

Tv I made myself and my children generate electricity by pushbike so its all free ;)

Anyone know what standard the Indycar coverage is like on SKY?

Is Indycar even worth watching these days? It's been years since I followed it or even watched a race.

Indy car isn't too bad, and made better by the fact that the Brits have been pretty dominant over the last few years.

Generally the commentary is via the Americans but frequently cuts to the UK studio for 'expert' analysis during the ad breaks, or runs a silent picture.

I got an old camping satellite dish and will plug it into my freesat box for melbourne to see how the RTL coverage and radio works. If I'm not happy with it I will probably subscribe to Sky monthly ticket thing for Sky Go or persuade dad to get sky into the house.. Also stupidly I thought that the Aus GP was this weekend and have set up the dish so will have to take it down and do it all next week!

Given the extra effort required for RTL, the fact its in German and SD, and full of adverts, and that R5L is now much worse than it used to be, I can't help thinking the BBC is by far the better option for people not wanting to buy Sky.

People say they don't want to pay £30 for 10 live races, but is all the above also worth it for 10 live races? Just seems a lot to put up with simply to not have to watch highlights of 10 races.

As a family we do not watch a lot of television, so a years sub to a service I do not want is a bit much.
I will give RTL a go as a bit of fun but feel I may end up watching the BBC HD rerun
It is a shame that it's not possible just to pay per race.

Pretty much this. Next week for example , the Aussie GP is live on Sky at 4 am. I've never in my life got up at such an hour to watch a Grand Prix - I guess that doesn't qualify me a a real fan but hey, later that day I get to watch the full highlights and the forum afterwards - it really isn't the end of the world.

I'm very much looking forward to what the BBC do with F1 this year, yes the bean counters at the BBC dealt the sport a big blow on terrestrial TV but no question the presenting team and new commentator will do a hell of a job.

The race starts at 6. Normally for the early ones like that I've just not bothered to watch the build up and just switch on about 10 mins before it starts. Makes it a little more bearable :)

I already had standard Sky (to get the cheap internet). Given that my old SD box was broken, and they were offering free HD+ boxes and £100 in vouchers back for taking the HD sub at £10 a month it was a no brainer. Costing me £20 for the year and I get a new box that records and HD.

Bitrate seems rather high. Recorded the preview show and 2 hours was 8% of the standard HD+ box capacity. Most programming is less than half that.

The preview show was 2% on my 1TB box.

I stood right next to my 42" HDTV and did think that the bitrate was quite high. I've looked at a few HD broadcasts since having HD put in and thought they were a bit meh but this preview show was glorious. Might be the difference between actually being recorded in HD and upscaled SD content though.

My BBC HD recordings (Top Gear etc) on my Freeview connected PC tend to be around the 3 GB/hour mark. If I calculate Sky F1 HD bitrates from this preview show then it's around 10 GB/hour. That's really quite a significant difference, unless my calculations are way out.

I wonder though if this is a ploy by Sky to get more customers subscribing if this glorious content is available to all users under some kind of free weekend scenario. I guess we'll see when we record the live shows next weekend.
