Digg.com - Modern Warfare 2 boycott.

COD: MW got so popular because of MP with dedicate servers not sp. We want value for money, what's the point buying a game for £30-£40 that only last 10-15 hours playing time. Have you try OFP2 online? is un-playable, remember the 56k dial-up era? that's what it felt like. I was really looking forward of buying this game for mp not sp.

+1

The COD4 SP took me around 15hrs to complete. But the MP is a different experience altogether.

what the absolute ****. I hate matchmaking. Oh well, could be worse. As I was reading along I was thinking "OH NO not that same crappy system as operation flashpoint" however, it isn't like that they actually have servers so It won't be a lag fest.

I'll still be buying.

Where did you get that from?

The whole MP system is P2P player hosted, there are no servers

It will be a lag fest

This is what a lot of people over at the IW forums seem to not understand too, they keep making comments like. "The servers better not be hosted in usa" etc.

The whole mp is P2P with the first person joining setup as the host. If his connection is **** then goof ****** luck.

The uk is a modern country but what are our upload speeds in the average household? 1mb max. Oh and say good buy to mods =/

Whoever made the decision to have p2p should be fired on the spot.

I really don't get digg, yours was posted a good 10 hours earlier which got to the top of upcoming, only to hang there with hundreds of diggs not making it to the front page (as far as i know) while plenty of less digged items get past, then some random gets to the top 10 on the front page, wut!?

Oh well i prefer reddit anyway, you always seem to see stuff there a day or so earlier than digg and it's arguably got a better community as well.

VM cripple your upload speed. It's rubbish. The game will be an awful MP experience. I have signed and will not touch this game with a barge pole. Hitler has it right, there will be no patch to fix it!

that petition is going up about 5 every second! refresh is a couple of times goes to show you how many people do care about this (unless its a bot) :D

Oh God I was worried we wouldn't get the played-out Hitler meme for this.

Also people who seriously think a missing feature from a single game that only a subset of the PC gaming community will miss would affect a publishers share price are pretty damn retarded.

A subset of PC Gamers? I think not

I think its the vast majority of PC gamers will miss it, no dedicated servers removes all bar 2 of the benefits of playing a game on the pc (those being better graphics and kb+mouse)

I have also cancelled my preorder and signed the petition. Whether all the potential lost revenue and anger about this decision will bother Infinity Ward is yet to be known.

On another note, why are so many people here comparing this boycott to the L4D2 boycott? They are worlds apart.

The L4D2 boycott was a group of people who felt that they didn't get their moneys worth of DLC from the original game and didn't want to pay for a sequel.

With COD: MW2, people were willing to pay for the game. It has been highly anticipated. However, PC gamers are not willing to sacrifice dedicated servers and all the benefits this brings to the PC community.

I smell a high level decision here by someone who doesn't really understand the situation fully - ie.

"peer to peer and matchmaking works fine for millions of xbox owners, what the hell are we doing spending money on development time for dedicated servers for the PC version?"

With a bit of look there's a lot of understanding headed their way right now :D

I think it's more to do with the fact they can charge for DLC and no doubt in the future bring in a monthly subscription service for IW.NET.

Its really not surprising as COD4 was heavily pirated on PC (whilst selling over 12M copies on the consoles with PC not even hitting 1M) so now as always the genuine buyers suffer and they cut development time to save money on PC specific features.

The reason the two are being compared are because they're both boycotts. Obviously they were spawned for different reasons, but it doesn't change the fact they're both legitimate boycotts.

You are talking crap there.
COD4 sold 13mil copies (http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-sells-13-million/) as of May this year - this is total PC + Console sales.

2007 sales figures:
TOTAL 7mil (http://investor.activision.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=289631)
XBOX: 3.04mil (http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6184847.html)
PS3 is 1/3 of XBox using the both Nov 07 and Jan 08 figures, so it sold 1.01mil (http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6184008.html & http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6186077.html)
PC: 7mil - 3.04mil -1.01mil = 2.95mil

If you upscale this to the total 13mil figure, then you get 5.47mil PC sales and 5.65mil Xbox sales.
Yes, clearly it only sold 1mil for PC and was pirated

Wow, you sure showed him :)

I didn't think 360 and PC sales were so close. Certainly shows that if enough of us band together, we can have an impact.

Do IW / Activision make more money on the console releases though due to higher RRP, or does the slice that is paid to MS/Sony negate that difference?
