Diplomatic Immunity

Once again proves that if you want to kill someone... use a car.

Most privileged people ever.

There's a vast difference between killing someone with a car you are driving that you know and have a grudge against, and accidentally, albeit carelessly, killing a total stranger.

There but for the grace of God go all drivers, accidents happen daily, changing and ending lives, caused by "nice" but momentarily careless people, who would never think it could happen to them.

Not overly surprised at the sentence, given what the charge was and pleading guilty.
The fact that she wasn't in the UK, and our 'special relationship' meant the US advised her about NOT coming to the UK is a ++++ take.
Hope the family can take something away given they managed to get to court given political smoke screen for the driver.

However, in actual reality:

and

Is that a criminal record that the US recognises though? I.e. would she have to declare it if asked - I know anyone can Google her name and find out about the sentencing etc, but if it's essentially just a UK criminal record then that's pretty meaningless too for someone who's very unlikely to ever set foot in the UK again.

However, in actual reality:

If you think that result will really have put them at peace, would they really have tried so hard and for so long to get Sacoolas back to the UK? When that (UK court case) could have been done without them here?

That chance to really put it behind them "might" have happened in the UK courts, had the result actually meant anything. As it is, they might as well have had a Twitter poll agree with them and that would have got them the peace they need as that "win" would have been enough for them. (Which we can tell obviously wouldn't be for anyone)

So the two ways to really get peace back to their family, was to confront Sacoolas in person, which they missed out on, because "reasons". Or a win in court with actual results. Since they've got neither now, they'll be back to the hating once they realise they achieved nothing tangible with this court case win. Pity them, for it will take them a long while to get out of it once they've wake up to the fact the win in court was worth as much as that Twitter poll win I joked about. :(

Madness that in todays world you can kill someone, admit to doing it, and get the effective end result of a let off.

I mean they could have given her life sentence, but she would never come back to the UK anyway.

A life sentence for a careless but accidental death was never going to happen. Drunk drivers up for dangerous driving causing fatality usually walk with 8 years, out in four.
If she had intentionally driven the wrong way down a road (equivalent to intentionally driving on the wrong side) it would have been worse but a sudden lapse of reason is not intent and as @Chris Wilson mentioned above, there but by the grace of God go many of us.

I'm aware but it was just an example that the sentence, while lenient, was irrelevant here as she'd never come back to the UK and the US would never deport her.

There wasnt enough evidence to support that case. No one would have got 20 years for that, that is crazy talk.

Didn't she say she did it?

"Sacoolas, who admitted earlier this year to causing death by careless driving, appeared at London's Old Bailey via video-link"

Another tony fail

I think Tony's point is no one is getting 20 years for careless driving due to sentencing guidelines, it would need to be premeditated murder at a guess to get anything close to that.

I said what I think she should have got.
The same as she would in the US.

But the UK justice system is a joke.

If there had been evidence that it was dangerous rather than careless it would have been treated much differently. This is mainly because she ran away.

There was an incident in Ireland many many years ago which I thought was Tom Cruise but I cant find it. Where this movie star who ever it was, was driving in ireland at night reaches over to change his radio station and ended up crashing and killing someone. No prison.

So your post as usual is another fail for you.

A member of the CIA, who's married to a US diplomat and is a white women, if tried in America would get a different result to what we have had here today? get real, if anything they would have just activated her pay for her time whilst suspended.

It does not matter.

She did it and ran off.
That's an offence she wasn't charged with.
Only in the UK.
