DirectX 12

And the difference for DX 12 visually will be ???? Better enhancements from the current iterations of DX haven't been great. DX12 won't bring leaps and bounds in anything graphical from DX12. Barely anything uses DX11 to it's full capability.

Back to the phanbhoy comments^^ You really do hate mantle. Tried to change your tune halway through to embrace but the above says it all. Brilliant.

I assume you are talking to me? If so, DX10 brought big improvements over DX9 and DX11 bought marginal improvements over DX10. If DX12 brings improvements, I am all for it.

I would love to know how DX12 makes me hate Mantle and I would also like to know how I tried to change my tune half way through? I have bigged up Mantle from the moment it was first announced and nothing has changed that. I was even more pleased when it was stated that it would be an "Open Standard" You can type the word "Fanboy" anyway you like but you have just made yourself look a proper plonker :D

If you wasn't talking to me, I apologise.

The funny thing about that is, Is Mantle any better visually? No. Do you know anything about DX 12? Mantle currently has one poorly recieved game under it's belt, and yet another delayed. Yet it's al right to **** on the hand that feeds you and brush off the platform that's let you play happily for the last 10 years. If you cannot see the utter stupidity in that, then well.

When it arrives and what it can do is all guesswork.

Consoles use their own tailor made api along side the dev kits, in no way does a PC DX upgrade harm console development.

DX be a thing of the past 'soon' ??? Have a reality check how many developers are currently on board with mantle, again how many of those are putting out mantle only versions? Saying soon is not only hopeful its very optimistic, if it does catch on and dx12 falls on it's face and ogl doesn't get a steamos inspired revamp it would still take years for it to filter down to the masses. Not being negative just realistic.

I think the vast majority my self included want mantle to succeed, especially if it forces others to up their game, but to think it can achieve instant domination is a pipe dream.

I don't think anyone knows anything about it yet, they have just announced they will be unveiling it at GDC in march. Probably NDA until then i guess.

Depends what we see on the 20th I suppose! It'll be awhile before we see anything. This is the first new build since 2009! We still haven't seen many games use DX11.2, which is supposed to have a few low level features.

Also, AMDs resident jester up to his tricks again, awhile back :D

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/04/12/1847250/amd-says-there-will-be-no-directx-12-ever

"This is a strange story. AMD Vice President of Global Channel Sales Roy Taylor has said there will be no DirectX12 at any time in the future. In an interview with German magazine Heise.de, Taylor discussed the new trend for graphics card manufacturers to release top quality game bundles registered to the serial number of the card. One of the reasons for this, he said, is that the DirectX update cycle is no longer driving the market. 'There will be no DirectX 12. That's it.' (Google translation of German original.) Last January there was another hint that things weren't fine with DirectX when Microsoft sent an email to its MVPs saying, 'DirectX is no longer evolving as a technology.' That statement was quickly corrected, but without mentioning any prospect of DirectX 12. So, is this just another error or rumor? Can we dismiss something AMD is basing its future strategy on?"

mantle already over :D

Microsoft already lost it to Mantle.
Unless they pay off a developer like dice but those guys want Mantle and unless Microsoft does it the same way which is highly unlikely as it sounds like Nvidia PR, we have a better card in a year (go figure) wait as that be great, (expensive) and not worth my money.

Microsoft is about to have their markets shrunken as they havent been able to handle the transitions to mobile mini markets. to expect them to have a low driver overhead, well good luck with that.

DX12 and Windows 9 is my bet.

Edit:

Just grabbed this from a facebook link.

Picking up from where we left off with last week’s discussion of GDC presentations, Microsoft has released a short teaser regarding their GDC presentation. The previously mentioned “DirectX: Evolving Microsoft's Graphics Platform” session isn’t just a session on low-level APIs, as we first surmised, but will in fact be the formal unveiling of DirectX 12.

Just what DirectX 12 will contain remains to be seen. Given the session descriptions for this and other sessions, low-level (ish) interfaces for Direct3D seems likely. But it’s not clear if there are updates in store for any of the other components of DirectX.

Historically speaking, Microsoft has been overdue for a new DirectX announcement. Other than the various point updates over the last couple of years, Microsoft hasn’t had a major DirectX announcement since DirectX 11 in 2009, with DirectX 10 coming 3 years before that in 2006.

In the meantime it’s interesting to note who’s listed as a participating partner in Microsoft’s tease. The big 3 – AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA – are included, but so is Qualcomm. Qualcomm of course is not a player in the traditional dGPU or x86 iGPU spaces, but they are a significant vendor in the Windows on ARM space, having their SoCs in products such as the Nokia Lumia tablets. Consequently, with Microsoft continuing to push into the tablet space with Windows RT, it stands to reason that some of DirectX 12's functionality will be tuned for tablets too.

Anyhow, we’ll have more details on March 20th when Microsoft makes their formal presentation.

Looking forward to building a new PC with all the new toys.. Finally some progression..

Intel Haswell -E CPU
20nm GPU's
X99 Motherboard
DDR4
Windows 9 @ DirectX 12.

This is more like it, putting money aside for this.

Ehhh. People in mantle threads have been saying for months about how MS have done nothing with DX in ages. Now a new DX is announced with no details about how innovative or not it may be and people are slating it?

Makes no sense.

lol aye, quoted that on the last page. It's Ridiculed Roy Taylor though to be fair, AMD have a disclaimer under everything he's said officially ;D

Ouch, expensive year 2015 :).

Although new Intel chipset? Always the worst for pioneers :D

I don't think it will be a good idea to jump in to early in 2015, maybe sometime around April when the dust has settled.

Having said that going by Microsoft's recent track record, Win 9 will be absolutely terrible and no one will want it.

Yeah X79 was a bit of a hashup. Native SATA 3.0 removed, VRM throttling, a lot of confusion and messing about. Intel cater for the big boys, so if DELL want it rolled out a certain side of Christmas and snap their fingers, then Intel are all over it like a rash - which is what happened last time round and us as high paying enthusiasts lost out big time as they scraped off features. Saying that it has aged pretty well, but things haven't exactly come on very far anyway

MS seem to do an Intel with "Tick" and "Tock" (Although i can't speak for W8, as I don't have it).

Windows 2000 was poor and XP was good.
Windows Vista was poor and W7 was good
Windows 8 (doesn't appeal to me) and hopefully W9 is good.

Of course people with 8 can jump on me and say I am wrong but I have had a good long play with W8 and I just didn't like it. Having to fiddle with metro to get a decent Start Button was my immediate put off.
