Another nice video dg keep it up. l always come away with a idea how to improve my times.

Hi. I haven't played a demanding game for a couple of years (just civ!) but really fancy this and I have an old wheel. I think I may need to upgrade my system (gfx)?

I have:
Intel Core i7 860 2.80Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1156)
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Geil Ultra Series 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-17000 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit
Logitech G25 Racing Wheel

Should I upgrade the gfx? If so whats best value preferably under £200 but would go higher if needed.

Everything else ok incl wheel?

The wheel will be fine.

For the gfx card, the 380x is probably your best bet under £200.

Dirt Rally will support your 5850 but it's regarded as a minimum spec card, so you'd need to play it on low settings to have a chance of decent fps.

I take it you're running Windows 7 64bit too?

Getting the big patch now, still ain't started it yet though, as still keeps randomly crashing in Xfire with Freesync enabled

Try disabling freesnyc and see what its like. Try using Display Driver Uninstaller folllow the destructions and re-stall the AMD Drivers.

Still crashing it could be a bug in the card drivers, make sure all your drivers are upto date, does it crash in other games?

Yes Win7 64bit although I was thinking of upgrading to Win 10. Should I not do this?

Just for future proofing, what would be next recommended card above the 380x?

Downloading Dirt Rally 2 right now, should be done by midnight.;)

17.3GB patch is bigger than many games, for goodness sake!

Thanks

No I only asked as in 7 64bit is the lowest spec OS that Dirt Rally will run on.

Upgrading to Win 10 is entirely up to you :)

It's been fine for me but there is people that don't like it & revert back to either 7 or 8.

They give you a 30 day window to downgrade back to your previous os if you don't like it iirc.

That would be the Radeon 390, or the Nvidia GTX 970.

Any card higher spec'd than these will likely be bottlenecked by your cpu. Even more so if your cpu is running at stock speeds.

thanks I'll get one on order tomorrow. haven't played a rally game since Richard burns one so looking forward to it

New patch is great, except one thing.

Rallycross on mine and 2 friends Logitech g29 wheels now rattles the wheel to hell. Sounds broken.

Its fine in rally and other modes but rallycross makes it go crazy loud.

Yeah will try it eventually, but it is an AMD problem, as i remember seeing it in their driver release notes ages ago as a known problem. :p

Doesn't even work in Xfire at all now, turned FreeSync off, tried to start a rally, but everytime the stage loads now, instead of starting it, it just sits on a black screen for about 2 seconds, then i get a BSOD, shutdown to prevent damage, physical dump job, then it restarts.

Runs fine on a single card, FreeSync on or off as well.

When i was on the 15.9.1 BETAs, it was fine in Xfire, when it worked, as i got the random back to desktop when the stages loaded with FreeSync, which was mentioned in the release notes of the drivers as being a known problem, crashing with FreeSync and Xfire in Dirt Rally.

Nothing wrong with my cards, as just ran through FS in Xfire to check em, and it was fine.

I'll be going back to a single card when the new ones come out (i run in single card mode now anyway tbh), as Xfires garbage, its just got too many problems.
