DiRT Rally Hits Steam Early Access

How well does it play on a controller vs a proper wheel? Might be tempted, but I don't have a wheel I can use, so it would be an Xbox controller. (As an aside, can you use an Xbone controller on PC natively?)

From what I've read the controllers seems to be perfectly fine more most people! Wheel wheel adds to the immersion and make the game even more terrifying but loads of peeps have been enjoying using a wheel.

This is how I finished one of my races yesterday:

May have to watch in 1080 as Youtube seems to have cut some of the end frames in other qualities...

It doesn't teach you anything at the moment! You can either start career blind or at least do some custom rallies to get used to the handling that said it probably doesn't need too much of a driving school compared to RBR as that is far more of a sim and expects you to know all the nuances of Rally.

For Dirt Rally just take it easy to start with and over a few races you will be able to push further, also listen to the co-driver and understand what he is saying!

Sorry, think I was misunderstood :p I already own DiRT Rally but the question was aimed at RBR game.

Whoops, probably me misreading X.x I think RBR would be pretty rough with a controller and you would lose most of the experience of what makes RBR special. Same with iRacing, rFactor etc.

Well I currently race using a G27. Not moved onto using the H-Shifter yet though. My thinking was that since RBR is considered a simulation. I could purchase that game and that in theory would help me when it comes to DiRT Rally? DiRT Rally doesn't provide much help to new Rally drivers, so I would hope RBR could teach me something.

For a 10 year old game though it seems pricey.

Ah, I don't think RBR would help you all that much to be honest as it is the other side of simulation it will be a lot harder to complete and race and the tutorials are shaped around their driving model. Most of that won't be transferable to Dirt Rally to the same degree. For example you probably wouldn't need to throttle the accelerator as much to hold traction, or be as hard on the handbrake.

What are you struggling with on Dirt Rally? For Dirt Rally you just need to read up on the co-driver meanings as that will be a big help to making it around a route and understanding what corner comes next and how you should approach it. (https://www.dirtgame.com/uk/blog/4529). Next up just take it slow and steady as it is far quicker than going off tracks and damaging your car. Over time you'll learn the routes to some degree and understand what the co-driver is alerting you to so you can adapt during the race.

The handling and such isn't too much of an issue to pick up you just need to try take it easy so the car doesn't go flying off the track and each tiny bump, then as you gain confidence you can push harder and try to abuse corner cuts and such.

Well anything would seem easier after RBR to be fair heh, not sure if you'll learn that much but from I remember the school bit did have a few decent bits of info on certain maneuvers like the Scandinavian Flick.

For a 10 year old game though it seems pricey.

Pretty sure the developer went bust not long after the game so I'd just get a second hand copy as I think there's only one place selling a digital copy.

my tips would be just practice a set of tracks until you know the bends and how hard you can push.

each car is different some will suit how you drive some wont.

so id pick the easiest car you like to drive then go practice on the tracks.

just had a fast run on sweet lamb with the pug 205 ti. 6:21

think i can shave a few secs off with practice but anywhere on track one slip up its over :D so brutal.

This game's like a dream come true, they've finally scraped Ken Blockhead and all that Gaykhana bull. I wonder hom many countries and cars the "finished" version will include. Hopefully, Japan, Finland and Sweden will make it;p

giving it some beans :p

Really nice run! It is great how the game punishes you for being the slightest bit greedy, I recognised part of the track at like 1:30 and thought you were going a bit fast to survive it and low and behold the bumps punish you by pushing you into the banking! Great to see a racing game with so much depth.

For those people who use a wheel and wheel stand pro. Do you use anything else to dampen the sound? So wondering if anyone else finds that the FFB in racing games in general cause a good amount of sound / vibration?

Wouldn't be much of an issue if I lived on my own but my bedroom is directly above the living room. Currently I've just reverted to placing a towel down at the back feet of the WSP but always looking for better solutions.

STOP ****ING STEERING!

I don't know if it's a bug or feature. But its driving me up the ****ing wall! I can't seem to just go in a straight line some times. And the actual steering wheel moves slightly to one direction of another! I've tested with 2 different 360 controllers... It's driving me insane and ruining the game for me a little.
