Discussion On The ATI Radeon 5*** Series Before They Have Been Released Thread

if they are even close to £400 then what a rip off, even 350+ is a joke.. and they are poking fun at nVidias pricing?

Well even £400 is cheap for a release day top end nvidia card. My mate paid over 500 for 1 of his 8800gtx's and well over £400 for the other but i don't think we will be seeing £400 for any of the ati 5 series cards except for the x2.

Exactly, people assume that just because the 4xxx series were value for money the rule will always apply.

ATi have always been seen to be more value for money than NVIDIA. It's unlikely they want to damage this and set the price too high ;)

Sometimes losing out on a few quid is less important than keeping a VFM image..

New benchies are out.. They don't show the mass improvement over the 4870 that's been bransihed before..

Like 40% increase, so.. slower than the 4870x2.. =/.

Well it stands to reason otherwise they would compare it to their current flagship (4890) rather than 4870 which was never amazingly fast to begin with, notice also that all vs GTX285 comparisons tend to feature 8xFSAA which in general has always been rather more crippling on an NVidia card.

I think someone is not doing their maths properly.

350euros = £316

Less France's 19.6% VAT rate = 264.21
Plus the UK's 15% VAT = £303

Marketing wise it would be silly to sell it for £303, it would be £299.

I paid £437.65 for mine in November of 06.

i expect to pay near 400 for a nVidia card because they usually offer more performance, it's weird seeing this coming from ATI if it's true anyway.. ah well

Weird?

The X1900XT dominated NVIDIAs offerings for a long time. Yes they got lucky with the G80 and ATi had a bad run with the R600 but they haven't done bad at all considering NVIDIAs market share...

For the 4870 yes but I don't recall their other cards being cheap, when they were the best you paid for it as I recall with my 9700pro and x1900xt

Calm down everyone, I'm sure it's nowhere near £400.

It has a US price of $399, presumably ex VAT becuase it's different in all states. This equates to £280 inc VAT

We think it has a French price of 350EUR, presumably including VAT @ 19.6%. This equates to £303 inc VAT.

I'm pretty sure electronic goods are generally a bit cheaper in the US than Europe so this makes sense.

To be honest guys, those of you who are complaining about the possible high prices compared to that of the 4800 series, here are the simple facts.

  • First consumer GPU with DX11 support
  • Fastest single GPU (By now you should realise some people will pay anything for 'the best' *cough Intel Extreme)
  • No direct competition (NV still a generation behind on launch)
  • Fantastic value for money in the form of the 4800 series
  • Launch prices are always pie in the sky

Either bite the bullet 'cos ATI are holding all the cards atm. Wait until prices settle. Wait longer until NV come up with some competition.

why does everyone assume the fastest single card so far is going to be really cheap? Is it because it's ATI?

I mean £300 +/- for this is a snip tbh.

Have to agree, and nothing like Nvidia pricing at all, still way cheaper, everyone must be forgetting their £535 8800 GTX's and what not, ahh hang on i see whats going on, its only Nvidia who can do stuff like this, man this forum never changes, so yeah, it is only as its ATi, you'll see when Nvida's GT300's hit at £500+ a pop, everyone will be cumming buckets as usual, and not saying a word about the prices, they'll all just be snapping them up. :)
