Discussion On The ATI Radeon 5*** Series Before They Have Been Released Thread

I've had Crossfire and SLi setups with the 4870 and GTX 275 ranges respectively. Micro stutter is a non-issue nowadays.

Still have it with Far Cry 2 on dx10 mode (thats with both the old 4850 512mb and now 4870gb 1gb) with the last 3 sets of drivers!! But yer, this is done on my list of 'shiny things to get soon' :)

Just comparing the 4770 (40nm) vs 4830 (55nm) not a direct shrink I know, but similar. The hole centres are quite different. Just means the centre pitch follows the die size. The 4890 was around 280mm2, rumors have the 5870 around 300mm2 so hopefully similar/same pitch to the older cards.

pics of card hole spacings

Hmm, are the hole spacings going to be the same as current cards? - is my MCW60 waterblock likely to be able to fit or will I need to get a new attachment bracket?

They've used the same hole spacing on bigger cards for quite awhile now, probably to save on jigs and tooling. The R600 was so big they rotated it. The Cypress die is supposed to be a similar size to RV770/790, but one report said it was big enough to be rotated. I'd say there's a good chance it will be the same. But they don't have to use any particular hole spacing.

Sept. 10th is not even that, it is pretty much ATi showing off their new cards to the press. Actual launch date is allegedly September 22nd.

Cypress is expected to be launched on 22 September, close to two weeks after the company unveils the Evergreen family of DirectX 11 compliant GPUs on September 10. Market availability is expected in October. In related news from the same report, the enthusiast-grade accelerator that uses two of these GPUs, codenamed "Hemlock", is expected to be out in November.

I'll be happy waiting until 22nd september or even later, just want to see some benchmarks and or previews so we know what to expect :p

Any news on how much power these are going to use compared to the 4890?

Everytime new graphics cards are released they usually need more power, no wonder in the future their will be electricity rations lol.

I don't see why ATi would have to paper launch these cards, they are not late releasing them and in desperate need of something show to prevent people from buying from the opposition (since it doesn't look like nVidia are going to be close to releasing their cards by the time the 5xxx series are launched). Having said that i guess we will just have to wait and see what happens on the 22nd...

I'd imagine they'll be shipping from the 22nd and will be into October before we see hard availability. Suits me either way as I don't get paid till the end of the month.

so they launching on the 22nd, but you can't buy them until October, paper launch then.

Yeah more or less - I suspect it'll be much like the GTX 275's launch initially, a couple of AIB's will release cards in limited quantities, and those who feel paying the extra for getting it a couple of weeks early can have it.

Are the new cards going to be based on 'new architecture' ?

Think I'll wait until the x2 version and a waterblock to go with it.

RoEy
