It might just be a case of selling at the right time, before your main competitor launches what is expected to be a good product.

Then buy them back when the prices goes down. :)

I know there's no concrete facts yet but how much faster will a 5870 be compared to a 8800GT do you lot estimate going on the rumours & specualtion so far?

Given the 4870 1GB is something like 40-45% faster than the 8800 GT, and the 5870 about twice as fast as the 4870, maybe two and three quarters the speed just as a rough estimation?

Depends a lot - at higher res or shader heavy games you'd see bigger increases than lower res, etc.

If we were to put some theoretical numbers on it taking COD4 as an example it would be something like:

49.8 - 8800GT
78 - 4890
163 - 5870

EDIT: Say we threw something that uses a high end deferred shader program into the mix and it would look something like:

5fps - 8800GT
11fps - 4890
35fps - 5870

I thought it wasn't released either <confused!>

and you chose to pay WAY more than the shop prices for a download version ?

mmmm............

To be fair, even if he did buy it from direct2drive, he could have used a crack on his preloaded copy and played it.

He's bought it after all, though he does appear to be getting the same issues as 'pirate' users, like the no AA for example...

They were a bit more than 40-50% faster, a 4870 was over 2x as fast as a 3870 and roughly on par with a 9800GX2, maybe a bit slower.

A huge deal faster.

That's pretty much what I was hoping, so like for like in an older tech game it could be around 3 - 4 times faster but obviously it will really shine in the newer stuff with the more advance shaders that the 8800gt just can't handle

Tbh im amazed at how childish a lot of the posters have got recently in this thread.

Anyway, im going to wait a month to see if the price drops a little once the 5870's been released then snap one up.

Im thinking a x1650 to a 5870 should be a extremely nice treat.
kind of like going from a dogturd sandwich to a expensive rare breed, medium rare steak for me! lol

Expensive rare breed medium rare? You've got quite a specification for a steak there. :p
