Do people really use Gmail?

I think its great too:)

Do you guys leave the emails on the server, or download em? Have they ever been deleted?

Always left all my mail on the server from the start. One of the main advantages Gmail offered was the inbox size so you never had to delete your email again. In the beginning they didn't even have a delete button.

Off the Gmail site:

7. Lots of space (and counting)
"We're always working to increase the amount of free storage we offer in Gmail, and if you want even more, you can always purchase additional space. With all that space, you can archive instead of deleting messages, so they won't clutter your inbox but will remain searchable in case you ever need them again."

I get no spam from gmail. However in my hotmail, that gets absolutely flooded, 30-40 a day on willy pills etc...

I was fortunate enough to get an invite right off the bat, maybe a month after it first started. I created two accounts, both identical names except one is spam.****@gmail. I used this one for anything I had to sign up for. My other one was never given away other then to family and friends. Years later, the spam account gets almost no spam but the other one gets tons (all out of sight in the spam folder of course). But still, go figure.

Does it compress archived emails, or just move them from the inbox?

Don't need to with several GB of space...

I use GmailBackup to run regular backups of my Gmail account just incase somethign happens to Google or I delete them by mistake.

Gmail Backup has a restore feature too and it backs up everything nicely.

I just realized igoogle has a SSL server, so I can preview my gmail encrypted too:) Also, "open in full gmail" now opens the message and not just take me to inbox like it did without SSL igoogle.

I only use my Gmail account on my G1 and even then its set up to send & pickup on another (non-gmail) account I have. Its just a shame that I cant get it to check my other email account more than once per hour.

I get loads of spam but its all willy pills and thai brides, so GMail filters it out and I'm left with my sensible solicited emails.
This. Getting a lot of Spam right now but Gmail is recognising it and putting it in the Spam folder. If it weren't I'd be quite angry but it is doing very well. :)

Well, seeing as all your reviews are positively glowing, I may well give it a shot by redirecting my domain emails through gmail. Would be handy to have webmail access as well as outlook.

I only use gmail now. I don't need to check the spam folder as its never made a mistake. Its fast, wroks all the time and can be accessed anywhere, plus there's the app on my iPhone.

Sacked Outlook and POP3 mail years ago.

Do you keep a local copy of your mail? For when 'net access isn't available, for when Google delete your mail... Mine still says 'beta'.

There are various bits in the Ts&Cs which put me off relying on gmail 100%:

As part of this continuing innovation, you acknowledge and agree that Google may stop (permanently or temporarily) providing the Services (or any features within the Services) to you or to users generally at Google’s sole discretion, without prior notice to you.

In particular, Google, its Subsidiaries and Affiliates, and licensors do not represent or warrant to you that:
(B) your use of the Services will be uninterrupted, timely, secure or free from error,

Well both those are resolved by enabling Gmail offline mode (Labs) and the use of GMail Backup (free software) that backes up your entire gmail account as .eml files so you can import them into Outlook or any client that support eml files.

Plus I'm sure that's just to cover their backs. I lost all of my email in a Hotmail account (nothing serious) and Microsoft said it wasn't their problem. And I'm sure there's something in their T&C that covers them.

Love it, can't remember the amount of times i've needed to search for an old email and because it archives everything i've been able to find it.

Best thing ever, and it's free!
