Does how you are personally perceived affect how your threads/posts are seen?

You should invest in a choke chain.

Meggy-V's not in to pain (well, as far as I know) and I'm not on speaking terms with fatmas. Chris1712 could do with a lesson in spammertry but tbh I don't think he'd want to, damnit.

Freefaller probably sees me as a war mongerer but if Virri Or CBS said something like i did it would make him think more and not just call them Naive and tell them to stop watching the media like he has done with me in the Israel threads :(

Without derailing the thread - your arguments and comments are a lot less well put than Virii or CBS - I have locked horns with them in the past over a few things, but I've learnt not to bother on OcUK anymore as it just riles me up :) It's nothing to do with you personally - I've liked some of the threads/comments you've made - we can't like everything about everyone all the time. :)

Heh, some of the more "vocal" people on this forum are in my opinion complete tools that hide behind their expansive vocabulary who I would automatically dismiss or confront in real-life, but I don't enter a thread with any pre-conceived opinions based on their username unless they have a penchant for posting emo garbage or pathetic "how du i tlk 2 gurls" threads. I've been part of forums for so long now that i've seen just about every type of poster and can generally gauge the difference between peoples online and real-life personas, which are usually radically different... though it's a refreshing change when they're not. I do find it hilarious though with some of the extreme/personal comments I see people make, and then imagining them try to say the same thing in real-life without the anonymity of the internet to shield them, 90% of the people on here would be as quiet and as meek as a mouse. I also don't find some posters that others think are "hilarious" remotely funny, just a bit sad for their e-life being the only thing that seems to be going for them.

The people I respect are the balanced, more reserved posters with knowledge or interesting characterstics who use smileys whe appropriate and are more considerate with how they treat people.

Either way I couldn't give a toss how I am perceived on the forum from a character point of view, the only thing I get 'worked up' about on the boards are issues of a technical nature (ie: people giving false information or being complete irrational fanboys), anyone who gets bothered about personal insults or comments should step away from the computer and the internet damn sharpish. :)

I'm glad you'd never talk about me that way

If you cant reason with people on here, I doubt you could dismiss them in real life without looking like a child stamping their foot and not wishing to listen merely becasue they dont like what is being said. If you wanted to physically confront them becasue you don't like what is being said, you'd look like a bully.

I don't ever contront people over opinion in real life, if only because it isn't worth it. I like to get on with people, and it can take me a while to know the limits of how far they can be pushed in a discussion without taking it personally.

That's true, but most of those comments are unreasonable on here as well.

I've seen your contribution in graphics and I can see that you put a lot into those thread and sometimes it does degenerate into fanboyism.

Does anyone know 'what has happened' to Davey_Pitch? I was just thinking about what was said about predicting certain people to become UBs, and it reminded me of a coversation we had at one of the meets I went to. I then realised I haven't seen him post in ages, so I did a search and it's been nearly a month since he posted.

Looking at the trail it would appear he recently became a MoH rather than a Don, but whether that was the result, or perhaps cause, of the reduced level of activity he talks about isn't immediately clear.

Yes, if I was that bothered I could always email him, but other than MM deals and meets I've never contacted another member out of the blue like that and I don't intend to start now.

Davey is on holiday at the moment which is why he hasn't been around for a while. He has his MoH avatar since he was a MoH before he was a Don and so deserves to have the title back that he earnt. Just to clear that up...

To Gilly though, i've found this an interesting thread....i think "status" or "reputation" does play a big part, i know i wouldn't have even bothered reading this thread for example if it wasn't you who'd posted it and someone i'd never heard of! As has been said though, i don't think there is a clique as such, just a group of people who have been around a long time, met up a lot in RL at meets and are therefore more friendly with one another than your average forumer. In jokes from meets are unavoidable, and i think anyone who sees an exclusive clique here would be very surprised if they met any of the people who are supposedly in it in RL. They're a very friendly and welcoming bunch :)

I don't even really look at usernames when reading threads, I just read the content. I'm also a lurker and just reply to whatever I feel like. Don't know how I'm perceived or if anyone has a opinion on me, If a few people criticised me I'd probably look at why they were criticising and then change my habits if I agreed with them. But I don't really post enough for people to bother with me. :D

Hell, Gilly. It's more the pics of you that make me have a preconceived notion of your posts!! :D

Especially that one that everyone doctors up with the lipstick!! ;)

Maybe my wording was amiss. I don't mean i'd dismiss them as in "blank them and not speak a word" I just mean I wouldn't treat them with the courtesy or give them the attention that I do for people I like, which if i'm being honest is most people... I get on well with the majority of folks I meet. As for "confronting" people, of course I don't mean physically (though sometimes I admit the thought does appeal to me in some cases), I just mean i'd challenge them about things they say about others or on certain topics.

I don't get involved in debates as much as I could or would sometimes like to simply because i've realised the futility of such things... they tend to go around in circles forever, or people aren't willing to budge an inch (or are ridiculously extreme) in their views, or are too quick to judge (even victimise) others over minor things. I personally just don't find the internet a realistic or balanced platform for such things.

I was wondering where he'd got to, also. Slightly digressing, but it says something about a poster when people think 'Hey, he/she's not posted for a while, wonder what's happened to them?'. It shows that something about that member has stood out, be it the quality of their posts, ability to debate or put forward a case. They've left their mark, and so must be doing something right. Alternatively, it could be considered sad that a person is contemplating what has happened to an online acquaintance, but this view could only be held by non forum-philes, whom we do not particularly care about on a forum.

I've been here a fair while but am not part of any cliques, nor am I particularly well known. I should endeavour to engage more, to be informative, entertaining, even chatty. It's good to be part of a group.

They've got to be like that in real life or they'd swiftly find they hadn't got any teeth left from being punched in the gob each time they said such stupid things.

I'm lost :/

like anyone cares what i think :)

Well.. I only started posting late last year after being a long time lurker.

I Am probably, if atall, perceived as an immature, insensative idiot because of the disrespectful things i sometimes comment on.

Sorry but i generally say what i feel and try to tone it down to keep within the rules of the forum. Again this could be percieved as insensative and uniformed etc etc. I do like to make flipent comments about stuff i know little or nothing about, just to further other peoples discussions.

As with most things, i respect the long time " experianced" users (BIG post count) But i dont particulalry think their material is anymore interesting than the odd random "how do i open a tin of beans" thread, Which i happen to love because i can try an make some sarcastic reply.

Obviously there is the clique people, older users, and there are those that look down on the nonsencse chat of the general discussion, prefering them more polotical and yawn worthy threads.

Thing that i am just coming to terms with is that many people are YOUNG, or maybe i am just getting OLD (29) and their opinions are so.. uninformed or so mainstream, hardly any of them think for themselve and have very rigid preformed ones. Many people seem to care too much about what they are percieved like also and tend to stick to really carefully worded posts that pussyfoot around the subject....

ANYWAY, thats what i reckon, i read these forums for 50% IT hardware and games and 50% spam and stuff that will cheer me up and make me laugh. If i put my nose into something serious its usually going to be a very truthful comment and i end up annoying most of the people that seem to care about the oh so "tragic" event of whatever BBC.co.uk uploaded that day :p

cya later

There's ways and means. I say what I think but flippant comments designed solely for a reaction is trolling, pure and simple.

Sometimes trolling can be fun and if its done in a good way can bring out decent responses and you go from there, but comments designed to annoy someone are not it.

Erm, yes I would have and have done in the past. You have only been a member here since 2005 and the frequency of my posts have gone down since then.

I would love to believe that, but god...I can smell the BS in your post man. It is so obvious.

I guess it is a sign of weakness when people have to result to insult in a debate....

I'd expect me to be some what ignored due to some heated discussions I have provoked in the past. I have a habit of ignoring someones position on the forum and if I disagree with something they have said or done I let them know about it, this caused some interesting discussions with Gilly and other UB's/Dons in the past. But equally I have seen Gilly make some excellent points (in between all the spam of spam of course) and agree with him on many things.

What always gets my hackles rising are the brown nosers that are desperate to be seen as part of the "in crowd". Equally there are those who are so desperate to "say the right thing" and be a model human being that it just ends up being completely false and not saying what they really think. (not sure I explained that last point correctly).

A person that sticks out for me is CBS, who took the time to contact me via ICQ during a heated debate (not with him). Garp sticks out.... but only coz I work with him :p ;)

There is definitely the "old boys club" feel to a lot of this forum, but that can only be expected when something is as well established as the OCUK community. However outsiders do feel it as daunting and resort to shock or arguement provoking in order to become noticed.

*wonders how many people may read this and go.... who the cack is noxis??*
