Does how you are personally perceived affect how your threads/posts are seen?

It may just be because I'm new and completely unknown here, but I don't really have perceptions of people on the forum, except one... (who shall remain nameless, but isn't Gilly, or CleanBlueSky, or any of the previously discussed people!).
Although I recognise names etc, I tend to read the post first and the name after.
I don't have prior perceptions before reading what people have to say.

I guess on paper, you and Gilly are very similar :p Yet for some reason you are not annoying and do it with charm, I respect that :p

Dude I read a fair few of your posts and really don't find you annoying. You can be a tad silly/naieve about things sometimes but then so are a lot of people. Certainly not close to being one of the most laborious people on the forums.

CBS

Perception from some:
Intelligent, arrogant, often condescending, supremely and unshakeably confident in his own opinions, severely anti-islam, thinks he's the god in SC. Would make a great politician.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up, though I offered my own edit there. :p

I can only conclude that he must act differently on the forums to how he does in person then :)

No, he couldnt be more similar in real life. Fact of the matter is that its text, you read it how you want it to sound, you give it the tone and interpretation in your head - you dont get any of the cues you get in real life. This quite clearly leads to all sorts of misunderstandings.

If you took your view of Gilly now and talked to him in RL for any decent period of time, I am fairly confident you would then read his posts in a "new light" but realise that he is exactly the same. It is your perception of the manner of his posts which is incorrect, not a change when he is online.

Unfortunately, the same cant be said of a fair few posters here by all accounts.

Hmm I have no idea what people would perceive me as as Im only an occasional poster in GD and SC, a very occasional poster in Music and Sports, and probably post more often in Windows and Linux, but even then I don't post as often as I used to. I think my posting style is pretty close to how I am in RL, and I would like to think I come across as being fairly knowledgeable on the subjects of the software forums I frequent. I'm perhaps slightly more outspoken in forums on certain subjects due to the semi-anonymous, debate-focussed style of internet forums.

I can probably consider myself part of the background noise of OCUK :)

Having met many people from the forums most are very similar in real life to how I perceived them on the forums

All hail the power of the shorts!

I dont understand the question
Say you're to start a thread.

Say you're a well-liked and well-known member.

Now say you're either not known or not liked.

This thread is about the differences between how people react to the former and how people react to the latter.

I treat them no different, if you make a stupid thread i would tell you as soon as i would tell a n00b with 15 posts :)

Ah, but were I to make a good thread and were someone not viewed the same as I (say, Harley or Megzy for example) would you be more or less likely to read and respond?
