Does something need to be done about dogs?

As a dog owner I think license breeders and document every litter.

Require owners to obtain a license that looks at the suitability of the home and family members, children etc for that chosen breed, then that license is given to own that breed only.

Could make the license renewal around 5yrs.

Already mentioned but agreed it should be a legal requirement with hefty fines for insurance.

My issue with pinning all blame on the owners is its basically a mantra of you are a good owner until its your dog that carries out an attack, and then you could claim to be a good owner, but everyone else would consider you a bad owner because its apparently impossible for a dog to show aggression with good owners. With that said I definitely the owner is a factor though.

You should never allow your dog to be in a position where they attack someone if there is even the smallest chance they could.

Dog owners are also quite possibly even worse than the parents of utter oiks when it comes to "my darling would never do that".

My partners mum has a rottweiler/lab cross and it growls at people, barks super aggressively and is insanely protective of her. He also bit me because he was eating and I touched him. They didn't seem to think there was any issue with this because I should have known not to touch him when he was eating and what did I expect.

Hes the sort of dog that could do a lot of damage but to listen to his owner you would think he was just misunderstood. At some point he will probably bite someone properly and no doubt my partners mum will be shocked.

Some dogs owners may be like this but it's not the norm. Your partner's parents are *****

What a terrible excuse from the owners. Part of training when young is to purposely remove the dogs food when they are eating and then give it back to them, keep doing it until there is no unwanted behaviour. It's to do with their nature of wolfing it down as quick as possible when in a pack 'cause if they're not they don't get anything. Through the training the dog will realise that it'll get it back and there's no pack to compete with.

People that get dogs of a certain type (or any for that matter) and don't train them are a bit like people who buy guns and don't practice with them. Both potential lethal weapons.

I think the problem is that there's already the Kennel club, and breeder licensing, where the breeder and pups are registered, where the bloodline can be traced, etc, etc. Anyone who is serious about having a large dog (like myself <Bullmastiff> ) will already know some breeders, knows exactly how to socialise them and how to train them and so on.

The problem is when you have idiots cross breeding random dogs with no control, standards or whatever, no idea what they're doing and frankly zero ***** given, you're always going to have problems.

Especially when the people in question don't even care if they get caught, quite often with some of these dogs the specific breed or breeds are very hard to identify, so if you have such rules - the practical enforcement of them is always going to be very difficult.

For the record; as a lover of larger breeds, I'd have no problem with having to pay for a licence, pay for insurance (which I'd have anyway) and everything else, the problem is the minority of idiots on council estates, who just don't give a **** - who are always going to exist in some form or another anyway, no matter how many rules you impose, and every now and again something bad will happen.

The question is why are we still breeding dogs en masse, when the shelters are full, and dogs get put down in their thousands each year.... a nation of dog lovers though apparently.

From a personal perspective when we chose to get a dog back in 2018 our daughter was only three years old, absolutely no chance that I was going to get an adult dog with an unknown history to be around a young child. I would have thought that would be relatable to anyone at either end of the age spectrum present in the household when choosing to have a dog.

Sounds like the fareham death was an American xl bully. There is one hell of a cluster relating to that breed recently.

So dumb. Owners need to be put down, along with the disaster of a breed.

Is the answer really not obvious?

Money... When you consider during lockdown that pedigree puppies were going for 3 grand + each. Averaging around 5-7 puppies a litter. It was a pretty easy 18 grand to make. Minus say 3 grand for chipping/vaccinations/food/toys until they're ready to go and you would easily have gotten 15k out of it. I bet most of these breeders aren't declaring the sales either so zero tax being paid.

I'm not sure what the costs have dropped down to now, but there's still easy money there.

Unfortunately until breeding is regulated, then this won't stop.

As another dog owner I wouldn't disagree to this, but the problem is how do you police it.

They’re horrible things…

We have a lot of large dogs on the private syndicate where I fish. There are Rottweilers, an English mastiff, several Dobermans etc, all are gorgeous dogs which cause zero problems.

Then there’s a guy with an XL bully and it scares the **** out of me and is highly aggressive to all other dogs, I wish they’d ban him with it to be honest, it’s a monster and it’s gigantic. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen one in the flesh but they’re enormous…
