Doom Vulkan vs Open GL performance

Vulkan> DX12.

Both are AMD and Nvidia are getting gains on Vulkan. However, on DX12 only one party wins.

Comparision ain't really fair though. Doom graphics are tuned for high fps, so you are more likely to run in cpu bound scenario, than you are on lower fps in tomb raider for example. If this game was done with DX12 instead of Vulkan, I expect gains would have been similiar.

Good video. Though his 1080 results on 1080 ain't really valid, as he's hammering most of the time against 200 fps frame cap. So his theoritical gains would have been bigger, if the game allowed over 200fps. Unless he just took stillshots from random location and that 197 fps for 1080 is results from that , instead of averages of runs.

Pascal gets some gains in DX12 too, just not Maxwell.

I think it is a bug (well maybe) in Open GL my max CPU time is pretty constantly under 17ms while with Vulkan the Kepler and Maxwell GPUs I've got here to varying degrees are exhibiting constant jumps to high CPU max frame times that is killing performance.

DOOM Dev: Going Forward, Compute Will Be Used More Extensively for idTech 6; More Developers Will Take Advantage of It

http://wccftech.com/doom-dev-going-forward-compute-will-used-extensively-idtech-6-developers-will-take-advantage/

here is confirmation my theory was right that its already used on consoles.

We use async compute just the same way on both consoles.

This explains why amd already have working async compute as its already been used on consoles.

7850(370) beats 780Ti :D
7950 match the original Titan

If it is anything like my results then they'd see big gains (but still not properly working) installing today's driver - compare this (780 Vulkan 3rd one of the set):

With this:

22% framerate difference but still slower than Open GL.

Why are people talking about cards that have been EOL for years?

Because there are probably 100 times as many people who own and game on 280x's than game on anything Pascal.... but they aren't sold any more so as we all know, those gamers are completely irrelevant, that performance increases on AMD cards is irrelevant.

Oh wait, I keep forgetting, anything that paints AMD in a positive light is irrelevant.

The future is also linked to the past. The massive majority of people who buy prebuilt computers and those who buy their own graphics cards for upgrades don't sell their cards and buy a new one every year.

If AMDs 3 year old cards are destroying Nvidia 3 year old cards today, then people currently in the market for a new card can think, RX480 vs 1060... wonder what the performance will be like 1, 2 or 3 years from now when most people buying cards today will still be using them. Old AMD cards get more support, have more forward thinking features and last much much MUCH longer, all relevant points for an forum linked to a store in which people are reading threads and making decisions on their future purchase.
