Dover Ferry Queues

It seems until now the pandemic and its lingering effects to a degree have hidden the reality of the new operating conditions of Dover and other UK ports. The other side is the reporting that Dover asked the government for £33,000,000 to invest in capacity to alleviate the problems and was given instead £33,000.

good luck .

need an OC (outside accredited) journalist on the ground at the ferry terminal to count the car kiosks available for the french passport checks ..
conservative mp exclusively says 12 .. other sources / itv / sky suggest 10/5/7 , and some new ones installed recently and maybe not operational yet ...
definitely a vagueness in the port of Dover details ... it does sound like the Boris truth disease

Counting and reporting correctly is pushing it a bit too far for a journo. Should start gently by showing people pointing towards France while looking angry.

The quote failed?

This was in reply to @Dirk Diggler

That was in 2020 and tbh I would be wary of giving money to those that completely failed to build a marina correctly.

How many of these people who are stuck in the queues only decided to go to France as put off by the queues at airports? They are spending twice as long and longer here.

I’m surprised that so many Brit holiday makers are using the ferries and the Chunnel to visit France.

When I visited family in the U.K. in late May, it was €100s cheaper to fly and rent a car for a week than drive.

Flying Ryan Air remains a terrible travel experience, but it’s bearable if you’re sa a packet over regular scheduled flights.

The airports have been carnage too recently.

Your statement hit me later last night that it didnt agree with my recollection of xenophbia in the dictionary, I thought it was more extreme, so I just checked the two main UK dictionaries
I hope Oxford and Cambridge are British enough for you, funny the definition is a little more extreme and seemingly more accurate than how your portrayed

Oxford (https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/xenophobia#:~:text=xenophobia-,noun,of people from other countries)
"a strong feeling of dislike or fear of people from other countries"

Cambridge (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/xenophobia)
"extreme dislike or fear of foreigners, their customs, their religions, etc"

I would equate customs to culture and I am fairly certain language would fit well in that description as well.

Imagine a world where you openly think that holding that position is fine and not something you need help with.

When you look at Phobia generally (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/phobia)
"a type of anxiety disorder (= a mental illness that makes someone very worried and affects their life) that involves an extreme fear of something"

Bless you, maybe seek some proper medical help. I have heard that a lot of phobias can be dealt with to at least reduce their negative impact on peoples lives.

Of the multitude of words underlined above, perhaps the most salient has been ignored, the word "or".

Xenophobia is neither considered a mental nor physical health issue by the bodies that categorise such things. Merely a social opinion.

The pitches of both future UK Prime Minister's are strongly slanted at appeasing the many xenophobes, such is their clout :)

Curiously the pitch from the man of Asian origin is probably the most vehement against rampant immigration.

Not that he's got a car in hells chance of being PM, because , well, you know, the x word people who count now. The people you think need medical treatment..

Sure, the first is from the FT which may not be available to non subscribers.

The second below is the guardian but there are various others with a quick Google.

If only there was a special containment thread for people to go and chat about that stuff...
Either that or please direct them to the nearest bridge, it’s a depressing subject at the best of times. It’s like your mate who won’t stop talking about his ex who left him for someone else.

I wouldn’t be concerned about the ability to build extra capacity for land transit, a little pain while the works take place and then the extra capacity is available For freight and non commercial traffic. The bigger question is why was it not done since various EU countries invested heavily for this to prepare ?

I just watched the clip, the marina was as calm as a mill pond, the pontoons as still as a gatepost. Some good footage there from ITV :)

Typical journo's

Even on a day with the worlds smallest swell, them pontoons move around like a mechanical rodeo bull, which can throw some people out that walk along the firmly fixed pier that runs alongside the empty marina.

This is a thread dedicated to something that is a direct consequence of the very specific, ultra-hard incarnation of the "B-word", that our government chose to follow; and you cannot have an honest discussion about what's happening at Dover right now without mentioning it.

People might be bored of it, and I understand that, I really do. But it's not going away, so silencing people isn't helpful.

These kinds of issues are only going to improve when people accept reality and stop this cult-like refusal to acknowledge the root causes, and begin taking positive steps to mitigate the consequences.
