Dover Ferry Queues

The British tourist industry will be rubbing their hands over this :) Every cloud....
And damn right they should. Dover is such a hysterical place, full of so many people who think UK=Dover because they are so close to the port, and most of them have family working the ferries or the port and get such favourable pricing, that they almost exclusively holiday on the continent.

You're not going to have an honest discussion anyway, there are too many people waaay too salty about it to have any sort of sensible dialogue, see some of the recent comments for example it's mostly just moaning, posturing etc.
That’s the problem with it, it’s far too toxic for it to have any value.
Remainers have become the new vegans. How do you know if someone is a remainer? Because every 3rd post someone will tell you they are and likely follow up with a condescending “I’m much smarter than you” comment.

Its tiresome.

Is the B word to blame for this fiasco sure, certainly some aspects of it are, but I'd say covid is just as much to blame, the staffing issues as a result of covid, and the fact the past 2 years have been mired in lock downs where the borders were closed either side throughout the summers to some extent also lead to a complete lack of preparation for when things basically went back to normal.

Should there have been some foresight absolutely, look at the issues with the airports, if that was any indication to the ferry chaos it should have been alarming at how unprepared they really are.

The B word has compounded the problem, but Google it - they haven't been able to cope with the first Friday of school holidays since the beginning of time. And they never will. It makes no sense to add capacity for a single weekend each year.

Yep.

There are very few things that the B[unmentionable] is soley responsible for, if any in reality, bar minor things.
All its done is multiply issues, expose weaknesses

Problem is there are still lots of simple cultists about who wont accept any responsibilty for it and still deny any fault of B[unmentionable] in regards things going wrong.

In this case it just added to an already significant problem. Whats annoying is that it was completely predictable and yet we were told it wouldn't happen as waving magic wands would make all the new issues simply go away.

It doesn’t help that everyone is trying to use the same crossing on the busiest weekend of the year. It’s like trying to go to the otherside of town during rush hour and expecting it take the same time as it would if you left 2 hours later.

Malevolence tried to claim these issues hadn't been compounded by leaving the EU by parroting JRM's statements about it being the fault of the French, for not allowing UK tourists to use eGates. He went as far as calling them dicks as a result.
It took me 30 seconds on Google to find out that wasn't necessarily true, with an article quoting the boss of Dover port who says that eGates don't exist at Dover and are currently impractical in that environment anyway, so I countered. I didn't insult, or belittle, or condescend him. Are you saying that I am the one adding toxicity to the debate, simply because I voted remain? Rather than the person throwing insults?

Is that where we are now? I feel like any sort of discussion, no matter how honestly presented, it being hand-waved away as "toxicity" or "saltiness", just because people don't want to hear it. Why are people so emotionally attached to this thing that they voted for, that they feel completely unable to accept any criticism of it? I voted remain but I'm okay with acknowledging the advantages of leaving when they appear. Why cant leavers be the same with acknowledging the disadvantages? If we truly want to move on, then we are going to need to discuss these topics openly so as to come up with solutions.

This TBH. If the French don't want the tourist money then stop going to France. We have many ferry ports in the UK going to many destinations. I didn't hear of any problems at these ports. Instead of spending hours and hours sat in a queue, go somewhere else, use a different port and spend your cash elsewhere.

The ferry company must know how many people have booked a crossing and they should also know the throughput of passport control so surely the blame is on them for overbooking their capacity and causing the backlog.

Must suck for the locals, the whole area just turns into a massive car park.

I voted the other way, but I can see the good and bad of both side, and think the issues we have faced as a result could be solved with a little common sense and elbow grease, problem is the people in charge are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Doesn't matter how "educated" they may be they are all under qualified for such a complex problem.

Other than edge cases though, everyone got where they need to. It's a bit like the current airport issue where folk are worried about missing their flight therefore showing up 4 hours early, compounding the issue.

The good thing about ferries is that they are not as constrained with who they bung on a ship versus a plane.

I think most of those types are currently on a ban. Normal service will resume shortly.

Exactly

Still struggling to get people over international borders is all a bit stone age. There's money in it for governments so you'd think they were incentivised to get people over borders smoothly, using technology. Serious investment needed.
