Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Going wayyyy off topic, but Steve Hughes a great skit on this. I can't link it because swearies, but search it. It's brilliant.
"You have adults going "I was offended, I was offended, and I have rights!" ..... well so what? Be offended! Nothing happens."

Anyway....bit of a pile-on here for the W-content...but is anyone out there still playing and enjoying it? :D
Played about 5 hours of it and I am. It runs okay on the Deck and an entry level gaming laptop but I think I'll wait until I'm home again on the gaming PC to enjoy it on a nicer set up. I kind of agree with some complaints about the dialogue and how flippant and "Marvel movie" it can be. But I suppose much like the Marvel movies, I enjoy the rollercoaster ride of modern triple A games.

Looks like it's written as notes by a character, to me. Reads terribly, but it's not a diary entry.

I'm not sure I'd describe it as "woke propaganda", to me it seems like someone jotting down notes to try to make sense of and figure out who they are. Whether people want it in their game is a completely different thing however. The good thing though is if you don't, it can just be ignored.

That pretty much my take. The people taking offence are the problem, not the game. I find it OK and have about 12 hours on it and will put in the odd hour every other evening until finished. When I play it I don’t get drawn in, but neither do I think “this sucks”.

If only it were that simple. Sometimes being offended is perfectly warranted.
Stephen Fry had the correct words (imo) on offence..

It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so ******* what."

My OH and a couple of different friends (from different circles) I know to still be playing it and enjoying it a lot.

When speaking about it they say it’s nothing close to a GOTY but they’re having a good time.

Is it just me or does the combat feel really slow.

I remember being a mage in dragon age 2 / inquisition and just throwing out spells etc this it feels realllly slow

Unfortunately that's not really where we're at these days. "I'm offended by something, that must mean it was hate speech, or hate something. Best call my local police station to report it." Is more where the UK is going.

Started Dragon Age Origins again, this time on the Xbox 360... I never played the console versions, as heard they weren't as good due to the weaker combat. Graphics aside, it's still an awesome game.

And that's another thing, people are receiving this game as it's it's ruined a beloved series of games.

Dragons Age is not particularly held in high regard.

1st game was great, everything else has been surrounded by controversy and discourse. Veilguard is not the first time Biowre has ****** off fans; Dragon Age 2 had huge push back from the community that resulted in boycotting the game

You do come out with some hot takes. Dragon Age is a very popular IP. The first game in the series is seen as one of the last great games from "old" Bioware before it was bought out by EA.

I really don't get the obsession in here, is it really that hard to imagine trans characters in a world with magic and dragons? Lmao.

It's the same types always trying to shout from the rooftop "I don't like this so I hope the game flops, go woke go broke" or "lmao this game is woke so here is data that shows the flopping and that's why". Nonsense, if you don't like it, fine, just move on. Personally I think the dialogue and VA is weak, especially on the back of Metaphor but the rest of the game is ok.

Just move on if it's not for you, there are plenty other games.

Popular is relative.

The series in total has sold 20 million copies (The 3 games, prior to this)

Witcher 3 sold 50 million copies.

I have a lot of time for Stephen Fry but don’t agree with this. The reality is it depends on what was said to be deemed offensive. Saying “I think gender is binary” is not offensive, “all trans should be shot” is offensive. Note I am not claiming people are saying this, just demonstrating when opinion becomes offensive hate speech.

Saying a phantasy game is no place for some trans material/characters and getting offended by it, is utterly pathetic. BG3 had openly gay or bisexual characters, yet was still an amazing game. By all means call the writing poor, or the gameplay, or the fact it has ruined the DA image. But to wish failure on a game because it has a message of tolerance, well that’s just pathetic.

The levels some are going to to “prove” this game is a failure says more about them than it does about the game.

100% agree. It's also the time and energy they seem to have for games like this too, most not having even played it.

It's a good game in parts but not a great one personally for me and that's fine.

And yeah, the narrative completely falls apart with BG3, which can be deemed by some as woke but was a massive success in every metric. Notice how the same voices were quiet when that came out.

It shuvs it in your face though and doesn't give you a choice. That's not tolerance, that's the game being hijacked for politics. Everything else in this game clearly had a lower priority.

Also the writing IS awful by itself. It's cringe. They replaced the writer of previous games with a random from twitter.

I think this more points to human nature. It is common for people to jump on whatever populist points that seem to validate their disdain or even hatred for something. But yeah, it’s just sheer hypocrisy in so many cases.

I’ve known people to get upset that a BG3 NPC male character came on to their deliberately scantily clad female player character they spent hours creating. Yet they were happy to romance one of the female NPCs as a lesbian. I’ve always found the romance in games very cringe, you can tell the lines were written by some sad male incel… oops sorry some male temporary virgins who are just waiting for the right “real” girl may find that offensive. ;)

It's irrelevant how well Witcher 3 has done. Dragon Age is widely acknowledged as being a major IP ( along with Mass Effect, for Bioware/EA ) ; you claiming otherwise is nonsense. And, earlier in this thread you stated you had never played a DA game, but suddenly you are an authority on it ?

By the same logic is it relevant how well Wukong or some other game has done?

Saying this game ruins the DA IP because it is sub par and average, is a perfectly valid stance. It’s one I sort of agree with, though I never liked any of the DA games personally, so ruined is relative.

Blaming the failure on there being some trans tolerant content in the game is laughable.

The jokes write themselves for these clowns.

Anyone even attempting to suggest Dragon Age is not a major IP should honestly be ignored, zero knowledge.

I certainly did not say that
All I know is - I completed Origins at least twice, possibly 3 times (with Awakenings DLC)

Played the sequel demo, but didn't like it really and that's where my time with the series ended.

Eurogamer calling it the "Mass Effect 2" of the series has me intrigued though.

Character creators - I don't spend a huge amount of time on really.

I didn't say it wasnt a major IP, I said it wasn't particularly held in high regard, i.e. the games aren't that great.

There hasn't been a DA game for 10 years.
