DrMartens comedy clown boots

A proper made in England, goodyear welted DM/Solovair will last a lifetime. I send my shoes for refurb every 3 or 4 years (worn every day for work) at a grand cost of....£60. They put a new base on and don't need to worn in again.

Not had much luck with cobblers with replacement soles, you pay money and it starts peeling off again.

Plus depending on work, for office sure it's different but for warehouse just get cheap work shoes for £30.

No way I could wear anything like DMs. They look so uncomfortable and heavy. But then again.. I have **** feet

When I wore them years ago there was always that little break in time and they seemed much lighter than those I had and still have from a couple of years back.

Guess I have been spoilt with Timberland, Cats and similar type of boots and the DM's no longer feel that good to me now. I have wide feet and no other issues.

Back when I wore such things (late 80s - early 90s), the uppers would last long enough with reasonable care to be resoled twice.

I purchased a pair in the early 2000s in a moment of nostalgia and was instantly disappointed. Despite normal cleaning and polishing, the sole outlasted the upper.

They're not heavy, they are light and once broken in they are comfy, but you have to get past the stiff leather part.

I did find mine comfy but I'd want DM/Solovair leather to be more supple especially around the top of the foot where it's constantly flexing. The sides can be stiffer that's fine.

Wouldn't mind another pair but I'm not paying £180 for a pair of shoes.

They aren't light. I wore mine walking around Japan and they really take their toll over time.

But I do love them. They're great. I don't really feel like paying £80 for them to be resoled, though.

Even my walking boots are under 900g a pair. And I rarely wear those as I find them clumsy/heavy

This sums up the state of most things these days.

Build a brand on good quality labour and materials then get bought or trade on the stock market - use that decades old brand to then produce a cheap boot with cheap labour, cheap material and double the price.

Frustrating all round.

Theres a yank on youtube who cuts open shoes, he’s brilliant and goes through the construction of them and the material.

Second link is to the marten stuff

Yeah my real walking boots and the fancy going out walking boots feel lighter and a much better fit than the DM's

AHH DM's , brings back memories from my 80's skinhead faze , 14 hole steel toe caps , tight jeans and vest that was two sizes too small with red braces , must have looked a right thug lol.

What is frustrating is they stopped making actual industrial work boots several years ago its just fashion boots now. The only reason I bought them was the soles that were easier on the feet now you can't get them and Solovair are strictly non-industrial i.e. fashion boots too. Worthless.

Funny thing is they still brag about their history of work boots.

Whilst not DMs specifically, I do wear a variety of leather boots across rigging, ambulance and coastguard roles and they all creak and squeak, all are leather upper and plastic soled. Mine squeak terribly yet colleagues with the exact same boots don't, I guess it must be down to leg, ankle and foot shape. But I found applying leather conditioner shuts them up for an hour or two, which is basically pointless and/or expensive given I'd go through bottles of the stuff a week just to maintain a squeak free existence :-P

Boots from HAIX might be good alternative for you, pricey though (https://www.haix.co.uk/ ).
