Dune (2020) - Denis Villeneuve

:( Denis is pretty much hinting that part 2 depends on box office.

Having watched all the promo stuff with the cast and interviewers raving about it post Venice film festival, this is the impression I get.

The studio know this is a big, fantastic movie that should do well across the general public from fanboys/girls of the individual cast members, book fans, people who're curious based off early reviews and all that stuff.

I think they're confident enough already to make part 2 and will go ahead, but this acting coy about it by Denis and co. is a deliberate piece of marketing strategy. Telling people it's imperative they spend their money to see this film to get the rest of the story is likely to generate more revenue than if people part 2 is green-lit already and people who're not die-hard about it might just look for a stream online.

Chris Packham did some nature show thingy a couple of days ago. He's trying to convince his step daughter to go with him to see the film. He spouted nothing but dune quotes. I don't think she was impressed.

Heard a film critic say they other day that the film was the most boring thing he had ever watched and if it hadnt been for loud soundtrack of bangs and stuff he would have slept through most of of it which he said would have been a much more pleasant experience :(

One critic? That's me convinced. Definitely not going now. :p

Oh dont get me wrong, I'm still going to see it at my local IMAX :) But I hope it gets the support it deserves and enough box office success. Critics describing it as the most boring film they have ever seen (and he wont be the only one) will put some people off from going to see it.

Arrival was considered by many to be boring but it was easily my favourite film of the last decade. I have absolutely faith in it being something I'll enjoy even if it's not commercially successful.

I realise getting bums on seats is important but as mentioned by someone earlier in the thread, "little timmy and zendaya" should have that covered.

Just watched a trailer:
a) the actor that plays Paul can't hold the character properly. The actor needs to have the same naive air of being a son of a king then dropped into it that it unravels everything. One scene the guy is smirking like his thinking "in a ****ing movie at last". Needs a GOOD actor that can make you believe the son of the king, then be pulled. through the thorns backwards on Arrakis.

b) Rachel Fergusson I can swoon over :D but she felt fragile. The sisterhood is one of strength but not physical, but cunning in their control of the ruling class and politicians.

c) Chani from the scenes and an interview looks like she outclasses the the actor that played Paul.

d) Duncan Idaho.. hmm not sure he cuts the war worn Duncan. Thought Stewart's Duncan was too hammed up. He's a military man not a Hollywood swagger. Needs a straighter act. Bruce Willis could have done well.

In short I think there's some good solid actors in there but there's also some very questionable actor(s) that may simply sink the Bismarck.

Stewart was Gurney Halleck. A black haired actor played Duncan, can't remember his name. No doubt Momoa's part will be much larger than Idaho's part in the novel which is relatively light. He more talked about than involved.

Well I just saw it. 8/10

I'm really torn. It's epic but at the same time sometimes hollow and souless compared to all other iterations of dune. Paper thin versions of my favourite characters.... Pacing so fast characters come and go with so little explanation.

I won't say a word more but I was expecting everything but i feel like I just got a newer "cooler looking" version.

I left feeling gutted but appreciated it.

Edit.

Well I've had a night to think it over.
I'd really want to see this in IMAX, he says he filmed it for, so the ratios are out on smaller screens... I'm still walking the crest of a dune between fantastic and average. Very strange feeling/opinion I didn't think I'd have. Overhype? Maybe.

Honestly wish I had an IMAX. I dunno if there's even one in Sweden.....

Midnight's edge has a small piece up on the film, no spoilers, and I totally share his opinions on how it's hard to digest the film, especially when you have so much to compare it to.

I knew there was a reason to move to Sweden .... It only took 7 years. That is Prescience right there :p my golden path.

Honestly they are all great films/series in their own ways.
