Dune (2020) - Denis Villeneuve

Dune 'SPECTACULAR' first look will reduce fans to 'tears' 'It's the new Lord of the Rings'

I must not hype. Hype is the mind-killer. Hype is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my hype. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the hype has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I see what you did there...and I like it, I like it a lot :D

When do the plebs like us get to see this footage then?

I thought the CGI looked crappy - just extremely fake and the thumper very poorly animated. Really really hoping that isn't an official trailer.

That's kind of what I was getting at, camera on a straight trajectory, no variation to the movement, a simple animated thumper. It's too crisp and neat to have any realism.

You have until December!

The appeal of Dune comes from the universe Herbert created and the Lynch film barely scratched the surface of it... as well as making a heroes journey out a story that’s although not overt in it’s message, has a major theme about the dangers of blindly following heroes and the damage that can cause.

Just ordered it from Amazon.

I've watched lynchs version countless times, would watch it almost every weekend when I was at my dad's in my teens.

It is about time I read the book.

My book showed up from Amazon...in Spanish :( Not a biggie, it's a free return but it does bug me that searching "dune book", "dune novel", "dune frank herbert" all return the spanish edition as one of the first results.

Fair dues it does show it on the item description page...half way down in a small box :D

I can't lie, i'm pumped as hell for this. Villeneuve has become what i hoped Blomkamp would become but failed.

I also had high hopes for Blomkamp after District 9 but he quickly turned out to be a one trick pony.

Actually, that's not totally fair, he did some good sci-fi shorts a few years back as part of Oats Studios.

So, started the book on my break. Powered through the first 25 odds pages before getting distracted by someone. It's remarkably well written and has a great flow. So far it doesn't stand out as being written 50+ years ago. I'm just having a hard time not visualising Lynch's movie as I read.

I think i'm going to finish this quickly.

Only casting I can't get behind with this is Zendaya, further reinforced by reading the book for first time lately...she's just a terrible actress...Chani's role needs someone strong and delicate at the same time.

Ironically Chani is a small part in both the book and the Lynch adaption but by all accounts it’s been beefed up but with a weak actress for this version.

IMO she's fairly prominent in book 1, while no chapters from her direct POV you get a very good idea of who she is, her motivations and she's reasonably well rounded as a character, without being fully fleshed out.

Not long till the trailer... teaser out REAL soon then a full trailer early September.

There’s a couple a screen grabs of Leto, Jessica and Rabban floating about but no footage.

2020 might not suck so much after all...

Was really hoping the rumours of a trailer with Tenet were true, alas, nothing when I just went.

Finally got around the watching the trailer on TV and it looks great, nice epic feel but the music is **** poor, doesn't suit it at all.

WB are pushing most of their slate back, WW1984 has already been moved and fully expect Dune to be Q2 next year at this rate.

Shame as i'm so eager to see this, even if I have to go in a full biosuit to the cinema :D

Part 2 is only being filmed if part 1 makes enough money. This is one of the reasons why the marketing is plugging Timothy, Zendaya and Jason because they will (hopefully) get the young audience to go and see it - it's simply not enough for Dune fans to go see this film, it needs to have LoTR or Star Wars appeal and make back what it cost and then some.

I thought DV had a 'free pass' on this one to make both parts? He said in some interviews earlier this year it was a pre-condition on him even starting the project that WB would let him make both movies regardless of how the first did.

We've also got the HBOMax series coming about the Bene Geserits, not sure how delayed that is by Covid though.

Yeah he refused to direct it unless he could split the book into two films which the studio acquiesced to. However I can't see them wanting to pump money into part 2 if the first one bombs. BR2049 actually did okay globally despite it's perception as a disappointment financially, so as long as it does as well or better (which it should as it's less of an art house love affair) then we should be good to go.

I guess we're in such uncertain times that WB could easily change their mind about the second movie.

I think it should do well, it's had overwhelmingly positive response to the trailer from the normally vocal and divisive online community. This is assuming enough cinemas are actually still open and able to function when it does arrive.

I think the other thing on Dunes side is that outside of sci-fi fans, most folks don't know much about it so it will seem quite fresh to a lot of people.
