Dune (2020) - Denis Villeneuve

I'm surprised no one else has commented on...

the lack of Feyd Rautha, has quite a bit of time in the book and of course on screen in various adaptions

Was quite excited on who the casting could have been early on.

The more I read this thread the more I realise what was missing from the movie but oddly, i was so engrossed in it and just soaking up everything on the screen, it never occurred to me at the time.

Maybe DV's vision was spectacle for the first movie with the deeper elements of the story coming through in future sequels, i really don't know, time may/will tell.

All this said, I still really liked what I saw, I think it's a great movie and i'll be going to the cinema again in a week or two to rewatch.

And I am sure I'll not be the only one, who at times thought that the score was a direct riff on the battlestar galactica theme's, enough that I later had to check to see who scored it, as I could have sworn it was Bear McCreary at first.

I'm about 20% of the way into a complete rewatch into BSG at the moment and can sort of see where you're coming from, I wouldn't have correlated them without you mentioning it though.

I believe Zimmer did two soundtracks for Dune, from some of the pre-release info that was around.

you also need to keep in mind that Jason Momoa stated while ago, is the first part is 2h 35m long and that there was enough unused footage to make a 4 - 5 hour long.

DV sort of shot down those rumours slightly afterwards, Momoa was caught up in the hype it seems.

“Jason is an exuberant being, larger than life in everything he does. He loves the movie, which he has seen four times so far. And every time he calls me to tell me how happy he is. It is true that if Joe [Joe Walker, the editor] and I had let go, we could have done a version of several hours because I filmed a lot. But the final version is really the one that ends up on the screen. I have never done a director's cut of any of my films."

And that's if he gets to do part 2 at all, I'm still concerned that it won't do well enough to even get a part 2.

I mentioned last night that WB have all but said Part 2 is happening, just found the actual quote...

Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that.

It's WB though so take it with a huge pinch of salt.

I read the books 15+ years ago - that’s a wait!

Well...I was playing the Dune RTS back in 199....ok, i'll stop now ;) Just need someone to jump in who read the book on release in 1965 :D

I hope they do decide on a remake/remaster of the OG RTS though, that would be a sweet cherry on top of this news :)

The likes of Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan are creating movies for the big screen experience, which is why they get so annoyed when their films are put out for home streaming services instead of getting an initial cinema run so they can be seen as they were designed to be.

I can't find the link now as my phone was pinging with lots of updates about Dune Part 2 last night but apparently it will be cinema only, no day 1 streaming.

Movies like Dune are not going to make back their money based on streaming service subscriptions

I also believe it's inclusive of the HBOMax subscription, don't think there was any uplift to view this if you already had a sub.

Also let's not forget those who just download/stream using the 'free' option, a lot of revenue will be lost that way when a shiny 4k rip appears on day 1.

I think the only reason Disney had success with their Disney+ day 1 releases was they charged another £20 on top to watch them. Any that are included within a sub, it's going to be very difficult to see the true profit.

I went to see this earlier this evening, I dont know if the cinema I went to had the audio levels all out of whack, but Jesus Christ the background BAUUM through the entire 2.5hrs was distracting as hell. I was waiting for the movie to end by the time Paul met with the Fremen, it detracted a lot from an otherwise good movie.

I'd say it was a bad sound setup at the cinema, there was probably less than a minute of dialogue I struggled to understand across two viewings.

I've noticed if I go to Odeon the sound is normally overly bassy and detracts from the movie I watch, whereas Showcase seems to be spot on.

Reading online, I'm not the first person to report this either. Large parts of the dialogue were lost, in particular the "fear" mantra.

I'm torn on this as you say, it is hard to make out and that's sort of what I was referring to in my post. However the times it is repeated, it's virtually a personal prayer and as such, is never going to be spoken too loudly so see it from both angles.

DV has his eyes on eventually making Messiah...

Villeneuve also says he’s keen to make bigger movies over the next few years, with no plans for smaller “Prisoners” or “Enemy” style films until he gets a bit older:

“If things go well with ‘Part Two,’ I could foresee the idea of maybe doing … ‘Dune: Messiah.’ That would make sense to me. After that, I think that I will make some other movies – let’s call them big movies, regarding their ambition and scope. And later on, when I’m too tired to do that, I will go back to some smaller projects. But for now, I have the energy to do this.”
