Dungeons & Dragons/Pathfinder/*

One of my closest friends gets very emotive playing D&D - cheering crits and bemoaning NPCs successes - to be honest, I find it all part of the fun.

It's a bit like being at work, where I need to assess people quickly and adjust my approach, the same applies to DM'ing. That said, sometimes I heap misery upon misery - and they keep coming back. Last night they got jumped three times and set off a nasty trap - in between the roleplay and exploration and a couple other fights - yet they're all stoked for next week's episode (mainly because they finally got to grips with the current antagonist - and chopped his head off!).

Last night we started the new campaign.

My wife is running three characters, fifth edition. Before starting Hoard of the Dragon Queen I'm using a conversion of the first part of 4e's Keep on the Shadowfell as an intro. Before starting that, I wanted her to learn the three core mechanisms - attack roll, saving throw, ability check - by having each character go through a mini encounter which demonstrated one of these.

As each character completed their encounter, they ended up on the King's Road to Winterhaven. The third character caught the other two up as he traveled by horse and cart. He explained his mission in Winterhaven to them and they agreed to help.

Party formed :)

From there, we had time to complete Shadowfell's initial ambush, conversations and a night at the inn, second ambush, burial site encounter (rescuing Douven), outside Kobold lair, and inside the Kobold lair, clearing it out and killing Irontooth.

My only major DMing mistake was that the Irontooth fight was less than epic. I had created him as a regular goblin, but I should have at least doubled his hitpoints after a firebolt hit him.

On the whole, we both really enjoyed ourselves, staying up far too late :)

I'm going to run just the first part of the Keep now, up to and including Balgron the Fat, but not opening up the basement, caverns or upper levels.

Will then find a way to segue into HotDQ.

Fun fun fun!

@EMarkM - Is your wife the only player? How does she manage to play 3 PC's? Just wondering if she has conversations with herself? Or do you play the other PC's and she just plays them in combat?

My lot started the starter set a few weeks ago, have another session in 2 weeks time. [SPOILERS for STARTER SET] They managed to clear Cragmaw Cave as well as Cragmaw castle. Has been good stuff, first session lasting an epic 13 hours.

Have already laid a few home-brew plots in there. There was supposed to be a Dobbledanger that they were to fight, but I had it shape-shift into the person they were supposed to be saving, who then ran away at the first chance. Will hopefully cause some confusion.

Will have my wiki all written up soon that I will post the link to. 3 out of my 6 players have written up their back stories now, so thats good. Just need to convince the other 3 to do the same.

Part of me wishes that I could play as a player however ... would make a pretty good paladin :(

This bit makes it all worthwhile, no matter what else happens :)
I don't see multiple PCs for one player as an issue - I've done it before. You miss out the interaction, but you still get to roleplay and it's still fun :)

A very similar thing happened in my version - except the two dwarves (one captive, one doppelganger) started fighting one another - which the party saw coming, but were powerless to stop. It was pretty funny :D

To Grady: she just plays the three characters as a team rather than as individuals. It's not ideal, but we've always done it this way and, as Pookie says, it can work out OK.

I do miss more standard multiplayer games like I used to run "back in the day", though :(

Got the book from a friend as she was sent 2 copies by mistake (they said to spread the love so she gave me a copy).
Not played yet as she wants me to run a session but I'm struggling to work out parts of it. I think the other books would be handy for this. I like the idea of it though so when I get more time maybe. ..

Anyone playing D&D online or something?

Getting back into the DM'ing and created a rather large chain of adventures so far building up to a huge campaign. Held off on the finer details though as I don't have anyone round my way interested in playing :(

I spent what seemed like most of my school years playing Dungeons and Dragons version 2.
I still have all the books, but only because I couldn't bring myself to throw them away.

In hindsight, I think I would have been trying to smash young pasty instead, seems like an utter waste of time now.

Like I was afraid of 'real life' and happier in a fantasy world.

I do think I would be up for it! I run my own 5e game as a DM but would love to play a character for once. Roll20 I take it for online?

Sunday sounds like a good time to me, a nice end to the week! Care to post some info about your world/campaign? See if I can get some inspiration for a character!

I'm difficult when it comes to timings as I'm overworked in London :D

On the plus side I tend to keep Sundays free nearly all the time so I'm nearly always free then ;)

I'd be interested, I'm looking at getting into 5e myself. I am totally green though so may require some assistance. I have the starter set and basic rules though.
