DX11 only a short term advantage says NVIDIA

The way I see it just now is that I normally upgrade my graphics card every Xmas when I have a bit of extra cash. This year due to the inflated(by whatever means)prices I am unable to do so. The irony is because of the price gouging I will not buy a new graphics card and that sale is lost to the industry. So it may be that many others, feeling the pinch also, because of the hike in prices will also not buy a new graphics card and therefore the industry may be doing themselves out of money in the long run.

what?? it's fine to complain about the prices but dont try and tell people you now can't upgrade because a 5850 is £30 more expensive than it was at launch - that's crazy talk.

Not saying I disagree that prices are a bit higher than normal right now, current prices are one of the reasons I bought my brother a 5750 (which is actually surprisingly good, especially given how far it seems it might be overclockable, but still got to fully test that!) rather than a 5770, as my xmas present budget is not infinate.

very true... and anyone who rushes out to buy a £550 gpu for 1 game! is stupid.

DX 11 wont be that big really when all we really get are console ports (dx9)

the next big jump will be with then next gen consoles which you would imagine will be on DX12
more likely DX11
DX10 to DX11 took nearly 4 years
DX9 to DX10 was around 3 years

consoles are what limit pc gaming

anyone who thinks prices will be slashed by 50% when fermi is launched is liveing in a fantasy land. yes im sure there will be price stabilization and proberbly price reductions aswell, but definatly nothing like 50%, nor the 30% in my oppinion. that would be £70 off of a 5850, it's just not going to happen.

I said 30-50%... and this will of course vary among the cards and segments. I would imagine 30% off the current price is VERY realistic given how artificially high the prices are right now (you think a 5870 is worth 330? If so, lol). If NV had released a good competitor at the same time as the 5870 was released, it would be costing 250 quid max. This isn't rocket science.

If i owned ATI or Nvidia and i had my Top product out and the competitor didnt i would put my price up to.Maximise the profits :) .If they work off very small margin and hardly make any profit everyone would complain when they went bust about bad managment. The thing is people are paying these prices so they will stay high until more stock is around of the 58xx series.

I am currently desperate to complete my new build, but I don't want to go buying a 5 series ATI card right now cos A) they are to high priced and B) I want to see what nvidia will offer with Fermi. The trouble is they are taking to damn long about it, I'm not sure how much longer I can wait.

I see where Nvidia are coming from. As already mentioned in this thread, DX11 games are very very few at the moment. By the time the big DX11 releases hit the market the new NVidia cards will be released and I`d bet even the low end new Nvidia cards do very well in DX11 games because Nvidia has had more time to develop them, rather than rush out initial DX11 cards just for Windows 7. I bet the 5770 struggles a bit when the new DX games come out.
I bought a low end DX11 card (5770) as I built a new PC with Windows 7 installed and wanted to have a look at DX11. However, I`ll wait to buy a real powerhouse until more games use it and Nvidia have their well developed cards ready.

Ati have cashed in with early DX11 cards but I`m sure when real DX11 games come out and Nvidia cards hit the market the Nvidia cards will walk over the Ati offerings.

I see the current Ati cards as DX11 Generation 1 cards, NVidia will be skipping Generation one and will be straight out with Generation 2 cards while Ati then take time to come up with something new.

Although the top end Nvidia cards won`t be cheap, I think you`ll be future proof for quite a while....

I still don't get this parrellel compuying business. So your GPU can run a virus scanner? Video editing is already supported by multicore support.

I hope what they are releasing is revolutionary but unfortunately I think they will still be judged by FPS. But the way they always seem to mystify everything is really getting up my nose.

EDIT: Okay for specialised applications is does have an awful lot of potential. Perhaps I shoul dread up on stuff instead of moaning. Although the impact this has for me appears to be next to nothing.

i don't think so matey, by the time nvidia wakes up and smell's the roses. Ati will be on the Dx12 to me nvidia are overpriced/old tech....to many fanboys

p.s look at what they did with assassin's creed when it came out, coz they couldn't run Dx10.1 they had it patch back to Dx10 now what is the saying about nvidia??

I would imagine ATI will have a revision ready for when Fermi is released. They will just wait and see what Fermi can do.The 58xx series has been out for nearly 3 months now plus the time to make the chips mean that the final spec was locked in quite some time ago/Im sure they will be working hard to improve the series since then.Hell i bet the 68xx series will be here next september(Hoping)

Quit the fanboi talk :), I find that rather tiresome - and you have Ati favoring signature.I like whatever is the best product at the time, whether that be Ati or NVidia. My own personal experience has favoured Nvidia I admit, however I like my current 5770, it`s a great product for the price. IN the past I`ve foudn some Ati products showing their cheapness, and fragile too.

I think things aren`t always as they seem in life, and there are two sides to every story (refering to the Assisns creed thing and many other negative stories that appear about a company or even a person). Remember that and you may see the real truths in life :).

Also note, I`m sure Ati play the corporate games also, it`s business (and commercialism and capitalism possibly at its finist/worse dependig on how you look at it)

I`d like to see more competition, just two companies in the limelight just isn`t enough

That's hardly a fanboy comment! Seriously.

You can't poke fun at, or criticise nVidia without getting accused of being a fanboy.

The way it's meant to be played thing is a dig at nVidia's programme, not a "pro ATi" statement.

Is the next Nvidia card still due 2010 march+ ?

Or is it late Jan...

I expectthey will do a big press thing as soon as they have an idea of what sort of clocks they can get from silicon 3, then it will be th eusual waiting game for the cards to actually arrive. much like ati did with the 5 series, but i expect the time between the "hey this is what we can do" and the "here are the cards ready to buy" will be longer maybe even a couple of months.

so possibly anouncement end of january with availibility in march, or something like that.

The real sad thing for those in the NV fanboy camp is a simple fact, the only time recently that NV have said anything to do with gaming seems to involve criticizing ATI's actual product.

"We're just around the corner from preparing our next GeForce"

I do hope in Nvidia land, "preparing" means we are just about ready to release our new cards.

Actually the 360 does (well a version of it). The name originally came from DirectXBox.

Sorry to nitpick, but DirectX 8.0a was released for Windows 95. The Xbox was built around the DirectX 9.0c API and released in 2001.

Here is an amusing video of Bill Gates introducing DirectX set to the backdrop of the original Doom 3D game.

Hell, you can still download Dx8a runtime for Win2k.

Still got my Voodoo 5500 64mb kicking around, that card was sweetness with dual GPU's :D
