E8600 E0 Overclocks

I think I need some expert advice here, cause I've done a little bit of OCing in the past but now with this E8600, which I should add is running faultlessly at 4.0GHz as advertised by OClockers, but I am concerned with some of the "reported" temps when testing (Prime 95 Small FTTs) or indeed from the logs when gaming.
It reports variously anywhere up to 126deg when under load, which must mean a fault in the recording???
This is with both Core Temp and Real Temp and placing my fingers on the top of the heat pipes shows that these can't be true.
My mobo, P5N32e sli, is by no means new and I suspect maybe the cause.
Can anybody allay my fear that I may be about to cook my CPU.

hey loz your core voltage seems high compared to mine.
Im running my e8600 at 4 gig same as you and my core voltage reads 1.272.

i idle at 42
 
Yeah the volts are probably a little on the high side for 4Ghz, though every chip is different. That said, even when I ran mine at 4.5 GHz I wasn't idling anywhere near 42 degrees (nearer to 32, 65 under load). What cooling are you using jasont?

Loz, the freezer 7 pro isn't that great for high heat imho, though it is a nice little unit for what it is. I got the OCZ Vendetta 2 120mm HSF for not much more than the 7 costs (£25 iirc) and my temps are frosty taking room temps into account :D At stock, I idle at 21 degrees :)
 
Yeah i think your right about my temps
I reseated it yesterday with the as5 i bought to go with it as my Zalman stg1 had run out.
Only had the e8600 three days,but my e6600 idle was 29 before i took out.
Maybe i should get some more stg1.
my cooler is a Zalman 9700 which has been great.

Thanks for the help and replies guys.
I reseated the fan, used Artic Silver and the temps are now much more sensible. 35 ish at rest and checking the log after manic gameplay, the temps seem to max out at 65deg.
Yea Jason, I think I'll try the core volts a bit lower and see if it still runs OK
 
Would it be worth the jump from a 3.6Ghz Q6600 to one of these? Or should I go Q9550 or wait for Q9650 to drop? I fancy some 4Ghz fun!
 
Ok iv had this chip awhile. iv been running at 4ghz with 1.25v.

Bacth is a Q822A438 i think.

Im fully watercooled but because of the case and the components in the loop it runs very hot. But its running no hotter at this than before.

Nice clocks guys :) Amidar, the Q822 is the 'best' of the bunch BUT... coming from someone who sold a Q820 at a loss and then paid to buy a Q822... I'd have to say that although I get maybe 200MHz more, it wasn't really worth it. My Q820 still got 4.2 to 4.4 GHz stable and ran super cool. Enjoy yours, and remember every chip is different.

Someone early in the thread advised me not to get too hung up on what everyone else was getting, or I'd never be satisfied with my own chip. There's always better, and always worse out there compared to yourself. It was good advice tbh ;)
 
Hi guys,

Installed my E8600 last night and I've just started to attempt to overclock it tonight. At the moment I've got it running at 4.0GHz (400.00 x 10.0) and all voltages set to auto.

Core temps seem a little high at idle both roughly at 40, but I guess this is due to the vcore running at 1.38???

My board - ASUS P5N32-E SLi (latest bios)
