Easyrider's Playon HD mini review thread.

Well impressed with this thing, more than worth the money imo and once I get my new tv (the 50" LG in the other thread lol) dropped into the lounge, I will move my Samsung upstairs and get another one of these!

Cheers easyrider, would never have gotten one if I haden't read your review mate

Highly recommended - just a shame that it doesn't have gigabit ethernet

BTW: Have you tried playing Avatar through this?

Was having a look at these last night (after reading this thread)... now I want one!!.. but I want the 500gb version! (I know its not the mini, but I want internal storage!!)... at £130 its nicely cheaper than a WD-TV Live and 500Gb Pocket Drive!!...

Might bite the bullet and do it!!..

what was it?

Stuttering on playback, really annoying, I don't think its the box, just trying to figure out what.

Didn't know wether we could talk about this here or not! (I am playing a bluray as a test streamed from my PC, my own bluray! Avatar), it always stutters when there is very complex video, just slightly like the FPS slows down

I played the very same files on the PC and no problems at all (so long as AnyDVDHD is running)

EDIT: Ok this is how I have this setup - its not the best setup but I am soon to buy another gigabit switch with DHCP // VLANs etc functionality:

Cat6 from PC (1Gbps) into ADSL Router (100Mb ports), router into gigabit switch (1Gbps ports) and PlayonHD connected to this gigabit ethernet switch

PC to ADSL Router (this is also the DHCP server annoyingly) = Cat 6
ADSL Router to Gigabit Switch = Cat 5e
Gigabit Switch to PlayonHD = Cat5

Is replacing those old cat 5 cables going to make a huge amount of difference to this? or is it more likely to be something else?

What do you think mate?

Your network is 100mbit due to the router, replacing the cable will have no effect. You could always put a laptop on the Playon side and do some speed tests if you want to make sure. Blu-Ray spec states a max of 48mbps for combined audio and video (some titles do go over this slightly and some peak at much higher for short periods) so you really should never have an issue with playback over a 100mbit network.

I am a bit new to all this but this unit and these screens are exactly what i am looking for.. I have tried XBMC but cant really get along with it.

Am i correct in saying that these screens are YAMJ working on the ac ryan??? Do i just download it and apply it??

Sorry for the really thick question.. :)

True if this is all that you are doing. In my setup, though, I stream from my main computer, which is also downloading, browsing the web, etc. And if you have more than one media player in the house, and use both at the same time, then there won't be enough bandwidth for both.

I upgraded to a gigabit switch and now find two media players operating at the same time are ok.

Quite right, good point :)

My system is not just a HTPC, its running Win7 64bit, browsing // games etc but I would have thought that it would be more than powerful enough for this (see my sig)

Got a day off tomorrow so will have a proper good look at it - I'll let you guys know, unless you have any further ideas?

Cheers

UBER: Thanks mate, I'll give the laptop idea a shot - I have my work one I can use for that

just looking at the web site now and it's still showing that it cannot pass through HD audio, can only do core pass through and downmix, can you confirm if you get HD audio from Bluray rips?

as looking at another unit and not sure i need another popcorn hour or not

where are you reading that? Although it's a little vague, it does say it supports full HD video/audio and HDMI is listed as AV out. I would have through the core pass through is what you need?
