Easyrider's Playon HD mini review thread.

taken from the specs on the playon site

Stereo
Dolby Digital AC3 5.1
(passthrough & downmix to stereo)
Dolby Digital Plus
(passthrough)
DTS
(passthrough & downmix to stereo)
DTS-HD Master Audio
(passthrough core stream & downmix to stereo)
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio
(passthrough core stream & downmix to stereo)
FLAC 7.1
(passthrough & downmix to stereo)

and no mention of TrueHD pass through, or even down mixing which was a problem with the units when i had one back in feb, no HD audio support

Am i correct in saying that these screens are YAMJ working on the ac ryan??? Do i just download it and apply it??

Sorry for the really thick question.. :)

You download the AC Ryan version from the website and run the exe.

You then point the mini to the indel file located in your media directory.

Very easy to do.

posted in july and still not released or a beta to be seen :(

taken from there forum,

Just a small update about the current official firmware update. Our developers are really working hard to fix the current issues that we got with the new SDK release. I can't give you a exact date, but I can tell you that we are expecting a internal test release around 9th of September. This will be a release focused most on bugs and critical errors found with new SDK. Not a exact date but gives you a idea of when to expect this release.

FYI,

and taken from what you posted also
which specific HD Audio will be additionally supported?… more details when the new firmware is released

so also seems like there not sure what they can get working

The Fact that there is support and development is good enough for me.

The tech guys actually listen to people.

Unlike other manufactures.

i originally bought one in febuary with it advertised as having full HD audio support, after it failing to work, they changed the spec and for 3 - 4 weeks we had not one word about it, personally if i had kept that unit till now i proberly would have gone mad

don't get me wrong either though the popcorn hour isnt perfect, but it did what it said on the tin for me the day i got it out the box, full bluray streaming and HD audio

will deffinately revisit in a couple of weeks as, the build quality and the actual unit was perfect and would do the job, but it does have to have HD audio pass through

sounds stupid but

If I were to get one of these and the official little wireless usb thingy

could I in theory plug a USB hard drive into the Playon HD mini, which would then kick out a wireless signal through the usb wireless thing and then downstairs could I search the usb hard drive upstairs via my ps3? (I.e NAS features) if so then I'm sold

Got a question.

If I plug a usb hard drive into the Playon Mini, will that allow me to drag and drop files to it via ethernet from my pc?

Sorry - What's the remote control like?

If the Playon HD mini's remote is same as the Playon HD, it is rubbish and unintuitive.
Buttons are everywhere you don't expect to be and the infra-red sensor is terrible so you'll have to point directly at the player. Pointing in the same direction as the player doesn't work, you need to point directly to it.

Yes but don't use wireless. I have the official wireless N dongle and a wireless N router and never get over 2MB/s transfer.
If you want to stream SD videos/music/pictures then wireless is fine, anything over 720p you'll want/need ethernet.

Yes.

Think mine is defective, tried every single firmware update including BETA and against two different PC's (one being a laptop on the same switch as the Playon itself) and I still get juddery playback, stuttering and sound loss, doesn't matter what resolution etc I try and have used two different tv's.

Highly annoying! :(

Are you trying a variety of media or are you playing back the same file each time? I only ask because not all films are encoded equally (Unless you encoded it yourself?) and all of these devices adhere to playback of L4.1 encoded material. Meaning, 4-6 reference frames max (1080p) however I have never had 720p material that wouldn't play.

What's it's deinterlacing performance like? I've started ripping my DVDs straight into an MKV container (I know I don't need to with this) but obviously it means the player needs to deinterlace the MPEG2 video.

Is it any good or do you see jaggies and the like?

can you guys with a playon give me some advice, maybe even a screeny of the folder structure i need to use ?

I have read the unit will format a hdd in its own way , 2 linux partitions and 1 ntfs (pain as ive already put 400 gb on my drive) but im trying to be proactive and arranging folders on my pc ready to move over when i get my ryan.

TIA
