Elden Ring

I've got this on Xbox now as well (dont ask). It loads slower than PS5 but otherwise the same. I was determined to try a new build and yet I've regressed back to magic.
Found two new talismans right at the start I missed before.

If you want to mix a little bit of magic (well, ash of war / weapon art) with melee weapons, there are various builds you can make where Intelligence or Faith is your primary stat. The weapons you'd want are mostly found mid / late game though.

I just started this and still getting the gripe with all the names and labels.

What's a Talisman? Difference to a spell attack to a summon (Ashes?)

Talisman is an item you equip that gives a passive benefit (and sometimes negatives). Eg, one could simply increase health, or give bonuses to charge attacks. Some raise stats but at the expense of increased damage received etc.

@SonicSW20 Thanks for that. My PS Char was rocking the moonlight katana and felt quite well balanced. Been tempted by a Dex/faith just for the fun of it.

Thanks,

This is my first time at a souls game, if you don’t count the 2hrs I tried to get past the the first boss bloodborne and failing…I am doing a Mage build and following a couple of online guides to get a strong start. One of the magic spells I found is call someting Slicer which is a magic blade, quite powerful.

Killed Ranala last night after 40 bloody attempts. I really struggled for some reason, it's a difficult one for a mage where almost anything from her is a one shot. Must be a fun one for Vig/Str builds to obliterate all her ladies.

Most annoying was the minute long run back to the mist from the nearest grace!

Even as a mage you should be putting a reasonable amount of points into vigor for survivability, unless you're *really* good at dodging / jumping and otherwise avoiding attacks.

She never got the laser off in my playthrough, I did her 2nd attempt, though without recalling what level I was, it's kinda moot.

She was easy, figured out the "daughters" with orange rings were important, killed them and she dropped, used Radhans Swords and she went down after three hits.

God devouring Serpent and Mohg the Omen are causing me grief now

Think I did her on the third attempt. First try it took me a while to know wtf I was meant to be killing in phase one. Then I got lasered in the next try then I ran up to her and wailed on her until she was no more. I used the fast stamina regen talisman so I could keep mashing with my katana. She doesn’t have a ton of hp but her main spell was insta death to me.

The God Devouring Serpent isn't so bad when you realise...
it's much easier to use the sword provided at the edge of the arena. It's special attack continually stuns it into submission and has a long range. If you use mimic it also gets the sword.
I nearly killed it with magic and the mimic after a couple of tries but I ran out of magic.

I got that sword, realised it was useful, so went away finding smithing stones to make it +10 :D I will be back to kill that foul beast! :D

There is a blind spot in that boss if you want to know.

I saw a stream where someone, who has a Mage build so quite weak defence wise, just got up to it under it’s base and just started using a regular sword and kept slashing. The only damage he was taking was from the lava which was minimal so every now and again he drank a flask, it look may be 3 flasks’ worth. Just kept slashing.

Yeah I know. It even felt easy afterwards despite it taking so many attempts. I was playing stupid, timing spells and refills wrong on the second half etc. And...

...the variety of her spawns in the second half were just annoying. Wolves I can deal with easily and quickly for example, and even the dragon and troll were avoidable, but the bloody jumpy/slashy guy that dodges spells was a PITA and took my concentration away from her laser beam of death. I don't think she spawned him on my successful attempt.

Plus I was like 4 pints in but DETERMINED TO WIN!

I've got a nice talisman that gradually regens HP. Really useful when exploring or waiting out a boss instead of using my only HP flask.

Did a bit more yesterday, took down another few bosses. Fully grown fallen star beast thing on top of a mountain, a poisonous tree sentinel dude just down the road from there, a godskin disciple and a sanguine noble ninja type fellow in a ruin who inflicted blood loss.

Bosses, bosses everywhere!

I also joined the Volcano Manor.

I’m now exploring a castle in Altus Plateau with a poison moat. Happy days! :D

Completed the game. 61 hours. Enjoyed it.

What level were you when you finished it?

Having not played a souls game previously I’m currently farming to build up my character before moving forward with any real purpose in the storey. I’m wondering when should I start. I saw a video where someone has a maxed Lvl 773 character which I suspect is NOT possible by playing normally as that character was totally OP on even bosses. It killed a few without them even doing the 2nd phase animation.

Once you complete it you can NG+ and keep your levels etc. Maxing attributes to 99 on all would take quite a few NG++++ but people just like doing it just because.

I think about 130. Some of the end game bosses and optional ones were still challenging, requiring me to go and find specific items and mixing my build.

I would just try progressing. The game is massive and it let's you know if you are under-levelled.
