Electric shavers

What did you go for?

I recently got a series 9 pro and the first time I used it I found it to be totally useless. Barely cut anything like close. Had to keep going over and over and over. In the end gave up and got my blades out.

Not tried it again yet, but annoyed given the cost of it.....
Soemthing is wrong there, I went from DE shaving everytime to using the S9 daily and found it was very good, like DE shaving a bit of technique to be learned but I was very happy first time using it.

Should have gone Panasonic, no regrets moving from Braun.

I've stopped using the Panasonic clean and charge station as it's just a bit of unnecessary faff when I can just wash the thing under the tap and spray on some braun shaver cleaner which also lubricates the blades once a week.

I stopped using the cleaning stations many years, and several Panasonic shavers, ago. If I get a new shaver one with a cleaner unit I give it a try, but they're all the same.

For me it wasn't just the general faff of maintaining the cleaner, but it doesn't clean as well and more importantly running it in the cleaner increases foil/cutter wear despite the lubricated fluid.

What I dont get is how a shaver can lasts yrs before it goes blunt,
I use the Pan everyday for 10mins .. I'd say blades last max 2 years , you notice degradation some pulling/splitting of whiskers. -
problem is the bank loan you need for a new cutter/grill.

Panasonic grills do eventually become blocked by whiskers at the ends of the hedge-trimmer type cutter, which prevent it having a full range of motion,
at which point you need to dissect it and use a needle to clean out the channel retracting the sprung cutter - the design isn't perfect.
if it won't move as far as it should the motor makes more noise, and is stressed.
I resurrected some old foils once I discovered that, you need a scalpel or fine screwdriver to push in tabs to take them apart.

You need a better brush.
Zero problems for years cleaning with this -

How do your cutter heads move?

Previous versions I had the cutter heads used to actually spin. This one seem to just have a flimsy plastic connection which goes from side to side to make the blades move, but the outer foils on the head seem to just vibrate a bit?

If I have a day's stubble it seems to be OK, just about... but still hard work. Anything more than two days growth it just cant handle.

All of the blades will be moving side to side on all foil type cutters.

at least on the panasonic - hairs accumulate in the A (hedge cutter) cutter where a brush cannot reach,
the internal blade travels along a channel and gets debris at the ends, which start limiting its travel
and you can detect that by moving blades with your finger from beneath
the other blades B/C, obviously, easy to clean.

Why is it so difficult to get replacement foil/cutter packs for the Panasonic LV67/Arc5... nobody seems to have them in stock.

I could upgrade to a new one for not much more in cost anyway, but that seems so wasteful.

What you need to do is get it under the tap also, I've never not had A moving.
I think I said before that about every three shaves I take the foil off, fill it with liquid soap and shave like that, try it, it works a treat.

You're right they are hard to get hold of and this should work, it says it on the packet and it is from the Panasonic store (you have to be careful with knock offs).

£66 though just for the outer foil :(

Ive got an LV65 and this fits it:

I last got one in January so i could probably do with renewing it and only paid 40 quid for it last time but as you say there seems to be a shortage on Amazon but found it here for a bit more : https://www.shaver-spares.co.uk/Item/WES9036Y

For the 3 head version in LV range, bought a cheaper shaver in the range for £25 which shares the same blade, they currently want £40 for the blade on its own

Definitely cuts better - but the reduction in shaving noise was incredible - can now listen to r4today whilst shaving, I'd forgotten I could when it was new.

the wear and tear must add a lot of friction, as the behaviour of the motor where it varies the power depending on beard density has returned too.

I've never not had A moving.
it's not that it doesn't move - it doesn't move as far as it should meaning more wear on the motor etc.

yes If you can afford it , who wouldn't replace every year

what other fragile appliance do you use for 10minutes every day, so mine had done some 100 power on hours,
they do start plucking/splitting hairs too, as the blades deteriorate;
definitely the white whiskers amongst the population are finer, more difficult to cut too.

Sounds like you'd really feel the benefit from a new foil and cutters

unless you only shave monthly

Does me like a baby's bum and I shave every day for about 10 minutes.
Probably because I use liquid soap and hot water which makes it way easier.
I take the foil off, fill it with soap, put it back on then dip it into hot water.

Philips 27788m series 7000 is the best razer I have ever owned, wet and dry and the shave is pretty much the same or better than a normal razor but you can shave in your bath or your bed. Fantastic. However the 8000@ nearly £500 seems a step too far....Inflation???

Have a look at a Braun series 9 with the self cleaner. I found mine to be excellant.

I use this as well, got mine on special at under half price, it was around 150 pounds (3 years ago)

My only complaint is the cleaning solution is not well sealed once put into the charging dock, so it evaporates quickly, so I stopped using it and now i just clean the shaving heads myself it comes up far cleaner anyway. I bought some isopropyl, put a little bit in a plastic bowl, dip the shaver in and turn it on, the liquid remove all the hairs and sterilises, and it dries super quick, then I also have a shaver spray that again disinfects and lubricates and it's as good as new. The self cleaning would come out still looking half dirty and takes far longer to dry

I was using a Philips series 5000 before this and I found the braun series 9 to be much better at cutting close on the neck - both have similar results on the cheeks and chin, but the Philips missed a ton of hairs on my neck and braun does much better
